I bought this router new two years ago and never used it but plan to use it now that I have fibre (with spark),my understanding is that every router needs a modem for connections,is that right?

Yes you will be able to use this with a fibre connection

Im trying to use my Spark modem and connect my router to it,would this suffice?I tried setting it up but interestingly I never got my spark username and password. The modem had connected automatically when I had first installed it.

The Asus router can connect directly to the ONT (optical network terminal). You then configure its WAN interface with PPPoE vlanid=10 with some fake credentials, e.g., user@spark.co.nz and password of password, as long as its not blank.

Currently the router will be configured with a DHCP client on the WAN (which would receive an address from Spark router in current config).

Note: The Spark modem is actually a router - modem terminology (which should not be used in this situation) refers to the ADSL/VDSL hardware in device which is not being used. In a fibre setting the ONT is really the modem as acts as a bridge converting fibre GPON (layer 2 protocol being used) to copper Ethernet.

So your understanding is incorrect.

thank you for that.I have been messaging Spark technical support and its like I have explained (in the simplest terms) my intentions and they have not given a proper answer at all.I was wondering what the spark username and password is (as I never got given any) and they didnt provide it when I was three times.
So you are saying I can connect the Asus router onto the ONT and everything is good to go if I configure the Asus router?

Yes connect directly to ONT and configure Asus WAN interface with PPPoE vlanid=10.

With Spark you use, as I stated above, fake credentials (as something called an ASID is used to identify the connection). username can be user@spark.co.nz, password can be anything without special characters and must not be blank, e.g.,

username: user@spark.co.nz
password: password
