Linux OS not able to load videos?

#Post
1

Hi Our old Hard drive was not working so we formatted it, then we could not reinstall Windows 10 because the CD drive is not working! So we got Linux installed via a USB drive (a friend did this, but now the friend has become un contactable) and now I can't watch videos it has the error can't play video because it may require video codecs? I am stumped as I have tried you tube for videos on how to do this but it seems so complicated & there is some key passcode I need but I don't know what it is. Please can someone give me some hope that I don't need a degree in computer software to operate this OS? And no I do not know what version of Linux & can't seem to find the OS info on the PC it is a desktop I know it has ubuntu. Thanks for understanding ;)

You can install Windows 10? Go to the Windows 10 website and create a USB installation drive and run it. If you were using a legitimate version of Windows 10 when you launch it first time, it will automatically activate when you go online and away you go.

Regarding videos not playing in Ubuntu. have commonly discovered FFmpeg is missing in the standard install. Ended up having to follow these steps here via command line to get it installed in my own installation of Ubuntu... https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-install-ffmpeg-on-ubuntu-20

If you want to reinstall Windows 10 (without the need of the CD Rom), provided you have access to another Windows PC and a suitable USB stick, as cube_guy says, you can download and run the "media creation tool" and create USB installation drive to boot into with your machine and reinstall Windows from there. Online Reactivation I believe should be automatic (provided you had a legitimate copy of windows on the PC before hand)

Very very very very few windows 10 installs would be done from Cd in fact DVD would be the minimum and that's pretty much out of fashion now.

Why didn't you write the win 10 setup to usb key and go from there ?

What sort of videos are you trying to play please? Are they DVDs?

Come on Tyger I thought you fancied yourself an expert. It's obvious.

The non-public codecs haven't been installed. Fraunhofer etc and require root privileges to do so, the "passcode".

Chop chop.

What brand and version of Linux, as there's heaps.
The easiest for ex-Windows people is Mint which comes with video programs built in.
Download VLC 3 and run that, it works with everything.

Maybe, but it is usually given as an option to install the non-free codecs for video file playback at installation. DVD playback is different, and slightly harder to get working.

Maybe indeed.

But given the OP made no mention of DVD's I'd think your DVD maybe is significantly larger. Particularly when combined with the fact that the optical drive doesn't even work.

None of which is very helpful for them given they have said
" I so want windows 10 back!"

chop chop

Who knows, but the original poster has not come back with any further information so no-one can help them.

Hi, on Linux, installing software works a little differently. You don't usually download them, the system will usually download any software and install it for you.

If you click on the "start menu" where you find all your programmes, there should be a "Software" programme. If you click on that you should be able to search for any kind of programme you want to install.

You can probably just click on the start menu button, it is probably a wee logo and just start typing and it should come up with something like "Ubuntu Software Centre" or just "Software".

The other way to do it is via the command line, but you might prefer using the software centre

Now here is the instructions to get the DVDs working:

https://itsfoss.com/play-dvd-ubuntu-1310/

Now to get the terminal window open push "Ctrl Alt T" all at once, or search for Terminal in your "start menu"
