How to adjust the volume of a new webcam

#Post
1

Is it necessary to somehow connect to another computer in order to know how loud my new microphone is? I can adjust about half a dozen sliders around my machine , but I can't find anything that makes a noise, unless I join a Zoom session and then they yell and shout and complain about my microphone making a terrible noise.
I don't know if the mike is working but it is probably OK.

What operating system are you using? Windows? MacOS? RiscOS? AmigaOS? LinuxOS?

If you can tell me, I can help you more.

Linux Mint. My old mike worked fine but the new webcam has its own mike.
Now neither mike works (according to people on Zoom). But they are not very helpful.

Did you select the microphone of the new webcam as the input device? It might still be using a previous input device like a headset mic.

Linux, something like this: https://www.onlinemictest.com/microphone-settings/ubuntu/

Open up pulse audio volume control and click on the input devices tab and you should be able to check the levels.

You could also do a test recording with Audacity

"sudo apt-get install audacity" should probably install it if you don't have it already.

Zoom is a bit of a pain for getting the correct input device selected, you'll have to most likely select the correct one each time.

I do not see this option "Step 3: Select the applicable device under Record sound from."

Can you see the device if you check the input tab?

I'd suspect the audio driver isn't installed or not activated, but I'll leave this to tygertung since he knows more than I do about linux.

If I use my old mike, that probably makes the correct kind of noise.
I have turned the volume right down.
Maybe the webcam mike doesn't work at all except make a lot of noise.

Typically in Linux you never have to install any drivers as they are already part of the ALSA kernel.

Well I didn't need a new microphone anyway. The video is remarkably good, so I may as well use my old microphone.
