Gets so far then fails. Does this mean my iPad is done? As in obsolete?

The original message you posted lacked useful detail.
What year & model of ipad ?
What update ?

However since you got it sorted that's good.

I run an iPad and an iPhone and normally when a software / iOS update is avaialble I get a notification. I understand that there is a "bright & shiny" new iOS available, os15? is this not considered as just a normal update, so you have to go out and "deliberately" seek it out and download... I just went it software update under settings on my iPad and as normal it checks what version you are currently running and then reports if an update is available... this time it came back and said "iOS 12.5.5 Your software is up-to date". If I want os15 do I have to access it a different way... this beg the question "do I need os 15" ???

Your iPad is too old for iOS 15.
