USB wifi network thingy

#Post
1

I rescued a computer from work which runs well and thought i would throw it in my Workshop for storing photo's when I tear things apart and have to refer to a picture to put it back together or when i want to research places for parts so I don't have to wander upstairs and fire up the laptop, Now it has no wifi but works fine with an ethernet cable, Can I buy one of those USB network doodads that will allow me to tap into our wifi?, If so what should i be looking for etc??, Thanks

You need a USB Wifi Dongle. They are pretty cheap and it should just work if you plug it in.

Is it a 'all in one' cause that'll also have a network card built in. Otherwise - yeah just search TM for

wifi usb dongle
or
wifi usb adaptor

You'll get heaps of results.
Be aware that wifi will not give as good a connection as a cable - especially dependant on distance from the router/ walls in the way etc. etc.

There were some on there which had an antennae built in. They might get better signal perhaps.

They all have an antennae built in, they'd be completely useless otherwise.

Yeah another way is to purchase a pci or pci-e unit which installs into the computer physically that'll give a better reception signal.

And one more thing to try if your reception isn't good is to use a usb extension cable, ( these are 2m max but that'll help), plug the usb wifi dongle into one end, the other end into the computer and hang the thing up higher on the wall or similar to get a better signal. I've seen this work well.

And I have heard you can make a dish to concentrate the signal to the dongle, like a satellite dish. You will need to use extension cable though like you said.

I'm genuinely surprised you haven't suggested this:

Eh ? I"m still waiting for my horns to grow. I thought that was what gave you the better reception ?

I have a Wi-Fi extender about 2 metres from where i plan to stick the PC.
So I don't need a card just a dongle doodad thingy will suffice??

If the wifi extender has a LAN port you should just use a cable.

Yeah, and just a basic one should be fine. We have a brand name one (ASUS) and it works good. Don't know what those no name ones are like, but they are probably OK, and they are cheap enough.
