Pedantic lythande... the message board topics are all going. Only one for TM issues will be there. So the MB as we know it is GONE!

This is just a heads up that from 15 November, we’ll be retiring our message boards.

Today we’ve launched our member forum – Community. This can be found on our Help centre, and is a place where members can give tips and advice, ask questions, and help each other with all things Trade Me.

As we now have one great new place for our members to look for help, we’ve also made the decision to retire our message board.

The message board was originally introduced as a way for members to help each other use the site, but over the years its purpose has moved away from that. We know this is a big change for all of you who love the message board, however Community is a place that’s only for Trade Me related conversations and we reckon it’s a better fit.

Community is there for you to keep chatting with each other about Trade Me related things, but for all the other stuff, this is best done in other chat rooms.

If you have any questions, please get in touch – otherwise, we’ll see you on Community!

I think it is self destructive behaviour closing the MB. So many people are lured to TM because of the MB who would then go on to purchase from the site, without even thinking can it be got cheaper elsewhere?

Coming to the MB was like having one foot in the TM store and when you've got one foot in the door you are more likely to walk into that store and explore, it brought us to the site, now that foot in the door is gone.

Totally agree. It would be interesting to see the traffic stats pre and post the other message boards closing and then after the rest closing

That's a shame, I would have thought Trade Me would want users actually on their site. I come in a few times a day to have a read but without the message board, that will reduce down to the times (more infrequent than it used to be) when I actually want to buy or sell something.

Kiwi's helping Kiwi's, that's how I'll remember it.

I wonder whether in the days before shutdown the feral comments will increase because there's nothing to lose, perhaps we'll see a return of some mongrel behaviour and resurrection of dead threads adding the final word.

This reminds me of "The Truman Show" (Jim Carry). People totally engrossed in some virtual reality, then it ended. After a short time, those who had lost a significant amount of their life glued to it suddenly move on and found new things to do. I wonder for example what happened to all the characters that used to hang out in the 'spirituality' board here?, there was always controversy there. Maybe they found a new home, dunno, I certainly didn't follow them and only viewed for entertainment value. NZ Vintage Computing on FB Groups covers a little of what comes up here from time to time but I'm sure some will be relieved to be spared some of the inane questions that regularly sprout. I'll have another 10 minutes or so spare each day now.

Just a warning to avoid the politics if you go there.

Very right-wing conservative crowd

Personally finding Reddit is a good system for NZ issues, though not as well focused on topics like here

Perhaps a way of silencing opposition to the new format? Then, those who invented it can claim that there is no negative feedback (other than customers leaving) and should keep their jobs.

Drop in the ocean to be honest. There are only probably 1000 at most now using these boards with any sort of regularity. Even less who actually post. It has faded away to a trickle from the "old days"

Fewer.

And yes I agree. But it is those few who were loyal. Be interesting to see how closure affects traffic and sales, because from my perspective that has be going steadily downhill for a while now.

Still, no doubt the new Community board contributors will let us know how business pans out.

Like all private boards, moderation has to walk a fine line between too much and not enough. At least here the rules were broad enough to allow everyone to live within them. Most of the time!

trademe is quickly going to end. facebook market is free, and oneroof is a better property market website. And if amazon is investing 8 billion in a datacenter, I guess we will soon also get amazon market presence too. A small bunch of boomers will "stick with what they know". and stuff will be doing a "end of an era" article about trademe's demise within a coiuple years.

I'm sure I've seen your TM name before. :-))

That guy was on 7 Sharp on tvone last night.

The messageboards were never going to last forever. Last year when they did their cull, the writing was on the wall. They have to keep improving, and removing that which doesn't push them forward. Too much time and manpower to moderate the boards.

I'm happy to stay here and keep selling, and hop on over to www.tmmb.co.nz for a bit of a chinwag.

It would be really great if the helpful people on here can let us know which alternative site they will be using so we know where to check for advice. I've learnt so much from them over the years, even just from reading other users questions and topics. Thanks heaps to the regulars.
