Laptop screen brightness

#Post
1

I have an old Compaq 6910P laptop, running Linux Lite, and used mostly just to read news sites. Screen brightness can be set using Fn/F9-F10. But it doesn't seem to stay at the selected setting. Any way it can be set to retain the preferred setting? Sometimes it holds the setting for quite a while, then reverts to a lower setting which I think must be a default. I have an idea that it may be reverting to this level after running updates. Any thoughts?

I know when I was trying linux on my laptop, the brightness setting would not behave as it should have, it was a known bug and I tried all sorts of fixes but none worked, it kept reverting back to a dim setting.

I gave up in the end and went back to MS.

Yes, it will have less RAM usage and be much faster. Windows is better than Linux in every way.

You would be better off to ask on a Linux forum. Most people on this forum are generally uninformed about Linux so won't be able to help you much, other than valuable suggestions to install Windows on it.

But I have discovered that the brightness can be set using xrandr. To find the name of the laptop's display:
xrandr -q
In my case the display is called LVDS.
Then the brightness must be set to between 0.0 and 1.0. To do this run the command:
xrandr --output LVDS --brightness 0.8
I found 0.8 to be fine for what I wanted. but you can try other settings for best personal preference.

Thanks to all those on this message board who have helped me and many others over the years. I've found that even if I don't get the exact answer I am looking for, comments on here often help with finding the answer.
