Update Android 4.1.2 to 6 or higher on Samsung S3

Is there any way this can be done? When I go into settings/about device it tells me it is up to date. The phone is only needed to download, update, scan the Covid QR code. If it is not possible to update this phone what is the cheapest reliable phone to buy to be able to scan the Covid QR?

far too old that phone, best I can see is you could get it to 5.x but thats by bastardizing it. Anything you can buy today will presumably run the covid tracer app, ask in store to see whats available, supply issues is the main problem these days

Pretty much any new Android phone, (Apple are NOT cheap).
These vary from about $50 and up.

It's possible that you could install an alternative ROM onto the phone which would run the App but that's going to be a HUGE learning curve for you IF you can find a suitable ROM - and then you won't really know if it'll run that Covid app till you try - and I wouldn't like to guarantee that it would. Unless you're really into getting deep into the Techy side of a phone and installing a new operating system on it then it's going to be far easier to just go buy a newer phone.

Thanks, I had a horrible feeling it was going to have to be a new phone. It is only a secondary one for a family member who doesn't go out much but prefers to scan in rather than have to sign in.

When you get a new phone take the old one in with you and get the new phone at a Voda or Spark or 2 deg shop because the S3 takes a Micro SIM and most new phones take NANO SIM which is smaller - which means your old SIM card likely wont fit physically into the new phone. They can cut it down to size though or simply transfer your old number onto a new SIM also.

This is the way: https://lineageosroms.com/i9300/

Latest official version is Android 7.1.2 (Nougat), although I see there is an Android 10 custom version available too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0mv_UiOuC4

It does involve a fair amount of faffing around in Windows with drivers and whatnot. Have a read of the instructions and see what you think. If you're replacing the phone anyway you really have nothing to lose! Note you need to install the Google Apps package to be able to use the Play store to install the Covid app.
