Replacement Laptop

#Post
1

Some years ago my sons bought me an HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC for Christmas. Nowadays it's looking rather unhealthy as I tripped over the cord, which resulted in the base of the laptop splitting apart on one side. If I open the screen too widely the split grows larger. I'll take it in for repair once lockdown lifts, but meantime, in case it doesn't survive that long, could the wise ones please suggest what would be a good equivalent replacement?

Well if I was you I'd check the cost to repair. It could be substantial as if the hinges have ripped out of the case indeed it might be difficult or impossible to repair. Hubby's HP is similar and he's had it apart. It's really not possible to repair it. Also the age of the device will make it worth much less and any repair could be uneconomic.

As for replacement that depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to use it to do. Theres several models of "G6" and without knowing more about the laptop it could be a low end or higher end model.

Hubbys 'repair - it'll only be temporary and will die sometime soon:

It's held together with sort of super heavy Sellotape he got from Mitre 10.

You could keep an eye out on Trademe for the same model (like, HP Pavilion g6's start at $120) as a donor, and then he could swap all the guts from the old one - keep him busy for a few hours.

Yes, that looks very similar to what's happened to mine. I did look at replacing it recently but Harvey Norman said an equivalent one (which I took with a very large grain of salt) would be around $2.5k. Current one is a g6 2203au which reviews say is a high quality budget model 4gb ram and 500gb hard drive and a 15.6 display which is important to me.

I'd prefer to pay around $1000.

Hardly Normals are bullsh*tting you. That computer you have could be purchased for about $150 from Trademe Now-a-days and a FAR better one for around $1000.

Your current one has only 4GB ram - nearly all decent machines come with 8GB now.

Your current one has a 500GB mechanical hard drive. Nearly all reasonable laptops come with SSD drives now these are usually 250-500GB and are FAR superior to the old mechanical drives. MUCH MUCH faster in operation which makes the computer work faster.

Your current one will have possibly an i5 intel cpu from several generations ago. Even an i3 of todays generation would considerably superior.

Your current computer might have DDR3 ram todays one will have DDR4 or 5 possibly which again is FAR superior to the older, slower ram.

A new laptop will NOT have a cd/dvd drive.
You can easily get your 15" screen. Take a look at some of these I've searched on www.pricespy.co.nz for you I put an upper limit of $1200 you can change it if you want.

The Asus VivoBook is $1199 and it's the only one of those which has 8GB of ram the others have only 4GB. I'd recommend 8GB. I've set the filters to only show Intel CPU's as I personally prefer these anyway lol. But that'll give you an idea of what is available anyway. And Hardly Normals were simply trying to upsell you more than what you needed.

Oh also unless you absolutely NEED Microsoft office - DO NOT buy it. You can use Libre Office which is 99% compatible with anything Microsoft and equally as good - and it's FREE.

And new computers come with "Windows Defender" which is a FREE antivirus installed my Microsoft so DON'T go buying one.

And DON'T buy any extended warranties either. The CGA will look after you.

That Asus is a very old model now - 5 years or so. I wouldn't be paying a grand for one.

It's kind of a weird time to be buying right now, not a lot of stock and prices are inflated so if the old system is still usable I'd keep using it.

Well I just did a quick search to show the OP that $2.5k is over the top to replace such as the machine they already have. There's lots of choices at much less than that cost. If as they say the hinges are dying I know just how that feels. They won't get better and it may be impossible to repair.

Thank you so much for your advice, very much appreciated and what I was looking for. I'm awake to the CGA and Windows Defender and already use Libre, all very good points. I'm off now to Pricespy! Though my current laptop is still working I'd rather get everything transferred over while it's operational. Thanks again for your helpful input everyone.

Maybe you could get the same model off of trademe for $150? As you seems to be reasonably satisfied with the performance for your current machine, it is just that it is damaged.

Thanks for the suggestion, but anything I've looked at around that price either has problems I'm not capable of fixing/dealing with or is out of the area and pickup only.

I use chromebooks now. Cheap but different as mostly online. Refurbs often available from daily deal sites or sometimes retailers.
