Power company electricikiwi vs contact energy

| The contact energy's goodnight 3h free plan seems very tempting. I'm with electrickiwi at the moment. I wonder if it's a good idea switching to contact energy? kail85 - 2021-09-14 16:22:00 |
| The last I looked, Electric Kiwi weren't taking on new clients, so if you moved to Contact, and didn't like it, would you be able to move back? Perhaps just something to consider I'm with Contact. I don't have that plan, but they seem okay enough. I pay about $60 a month in fixed charges, and then about 14c per kwh, which works for me, as we use a lot of power. phoenix22 - 2021-09-14 16:53:00 |
| Our last power bill with Contact was $95.00 for the month martin11 - 2021-09-14 16:59:00 |
| I'm with electric kiwi and I've been thinking about that deal too..... but on contact's webpage about this offer, I couldn't see what the actual rates/daily charges are so I gave up. But it does look tempting..... just have to run around after 9pm doing the washing, vacuuming, dryer etc so not great if you are winding down at that time of night. Still 3 hours of free power sounds good. oakcottage - 2021-09-14 17:02:00 |

you will see the rates during the signing up process. kail85 - 2021-09-14 18:01:00 |
| Have you tried Powerswitch? amasser - 2021-09-15 10:04:00 |

| You do realise that the majority of the ownership of Electric Kiwi isn't held by New Zealanders? gyrogearloose - 2021-09-15 11:42:00 |
| I am already a Contact customer on an everyday low user plan. Yes they make it hard to see the Goodnight charge details and no wonder: Goodnight would charge me $1.68 daily charge (vs 30c now) plus 20c per unit. If the rates are hard to find, it is a con. aprilguy - 2021-09-16 10:48:00 |
| I swapped last month from EK to Contact. It was a no brainer in the end, EK kept increasing their rates, Contact was actually cheaper per KWH on the paid hours by about 15% and 3x the free hours. We used 9pm as our hour free anyway, but if you used another time it might not be as good. I did contact EK and ask what they would do, their response. We are a cooler brand so people will stick with us which was a rubbish response. As we have ducted heating and a spa etc all on timers, it saves quite a chunk those extra couple of hours. If you sign up - you can use this code in the refferal code process - FRPW9B8 and get $100 credit as well ( oh and I will to :) ) mikek - 2021-09-16 11:02:00 |

Sounds like you are on a low user plan, but were looking at a standard user plan for the goodnight plan. You can be a low user on the goodnight plan, so probably just need to select it. dolsen - 2021-09-17 17:22:00 |
| Yes Dolsen I just tried and terrible user experience as before, charges still unclear just gives a rate for some hours of the day. Could be a good deal but if so why not make details clear before starting the signup process? aprilguy - 2021-09-17 17:37:00 |
| Powershop always came up the cheapest eery time we checked. Why not them? Electric Kiwi gives you "free hour of power", but some people rightly pointed out how this really changed their lifestyle, as they were trying to cram all their chores into that one hour. Yes, you can change it every day, but again-this is not living. I don't know anything about Contact, but we've been happy with Powershop for years. evoalg - 2021-09-17 21:05:00 |
| My daughter and I are with Powershop. They came up the cheapest for both of us. Different areas. We have had no issues with them. I was previously with Contact. Even with Contact's 22% Discount for online, on time payment, Powershop were cheaper. Daughter has only been with Powershop. joanie04 - 2021-09-17 21:22:00 |

Can you open a special electricity payment account inside your own internet banking system and pay money into there anyway? You'd need a buffer amount first, to cover the highest winter bills for a couple of months, but it could all be set up automatically. Then their direct debit would be directed to this special account. It's just a wee bit of faffing around for the same result, but instead of the money being stored in their account, it's stored in yours. hazelnut2 - 2021-09-18 08:22:00 |
| Just checked my last bill and the daughters. We both pay $10.70 fixed charge. Her usage works out at 30cents per unit (average) and mine at 42cents per unit (average). In different areas she is in the WEL energy area and I am in the Top Energy area. Her charges are nearly 10cents per unit less than mine. I have always known we pay more up here. joanie04 - 2021-09-18 15:33:00 |
| The only way to gauge electricity bills is to divide how much you pay, by the amount of units you use. Yes theres other factors, ' hour of free power' etc. marte - 2021-09-18 17:58:00 |

| I was with Electric Kiwi for a couple of years until their last price increase (had two increases within a few months). I changed to Contact just on a normal plan, no specials or anything. My average power bill is less than what it was with Electric Kiwi. When I phoned EK to question their price increases they gave me the same response as one of the posters above "We're cool". No, no EK you're not. They have a higher KW charge to offset your hour of free power. Nothing is ever really free. Edited by carriedaway74 at 6:23 pm, Fri 15 Oct carriedaway74 - 2021-10-15 18:19:00 |

| We are with contact and switched 3 properties into their free power 9pm to midnight when it was first promoted. One example of one monthly account: Two properties are in the same town and have the same rates as the above example, the other one is rural and has different, higher daily fixed charges and a KWh price of 30.400cents. We find it worth the effort to use the dishwasher and washer driers at 9pm. lovelurking - 2021-11-06 09:58:00 |
| I tried to switch but the Contact 3 free hours was fully subscribed in my area sarahb5 - 2021-11-06 10:01:00 |
