1 | Wife was watching her show and just went black. 55 inch, so replacement is a few thousand dollars. But of course, you can't go and look at present. smallwoods - 2021-09-05 16:41:00 |
2 | They start at $1000 ish and go up. have you checked the socket it's getting power from is live ? At the age that one is I doubt I'd bother spending money to fix it. nice_lady - 2021-09-05 16:49:00 |
3 | Check out pbtech they have some reasonable priced tv's aoc1 - 2021-09-05 16:59:00 |

Why would you need a sound bar? Surely the built in TV speakers should be sufficient to hear what the people on the TV are saying? tygertung - 2021-09-05 18:08:00 |

If you think the sound that comes out of TV speakers is good, then you wouldn't need a sound bar, but I can't stand the noise that TV's make. loud_37 - 2021-09-05 18:17:00 |
7 | tygertung wrote: Sure. If you only use your TV for the news. Saying the sound on standard TV speakers is sufficient is like saying it's sufficient to listen to music on a mono transistor radio with a speaker the size of a 50c coin. TVs are used to watch movies, sports, music, gaming.......Upgrading the sound system is one of the easiest, cheapest, and best things you can do. callum.irvine - 2021-09-05 18:46:00 |
8 | most of the noise that comes out of tvs is rubbishy adds, fake news, and stupid sky tv self promoting wind me up and make me mad adds, we end up watching y/tube or Netflix most nights. snork28 - 2021-09-05 18:46:00 |

I agree entirely but a lot of people seem to think, and I've seen some very 'stronly worded' debate on here about it, that the inbuilt TV speakers are such crap that a sound bar is essential. ! Personally I don't agree. nice_lady - 2021-09-05 18:49:00 |
10 | and as for lg i will never own another product made by them after the boot loop problem that they wouldnt fix with their phones and a washing machine that sucked a kumara in the electronics whilst still basically new but just out of warranty. snork28 - 2021-09-05 18:52:00 |

Don't be dumb. NO-one only uses the TV for the news. callum.irvine wrote:
If that's your experience then you must have a really really really shitty TV. Our 55" LG has excellent sound. callum.irvine wrote:
It's not cheap to buy some of those sound bars etc you're looking at several hundy. Why should you need such when you've just spent $1500 or maybe a lot more on the TV - it's ridiculous. nice_lady - 2021-09-05 18:53:00 |

Hmm I can't comment on the phone bootloop without a lot more info but as for the washer you let them get away with that ? nice_lady - 2021-09-05 18:56:00 |
13 | Had this old girl since HN opened in Gis, so about 10 yrs old. Looks to be the mother board, $277 to replace it. 3D with surround sound, smart TV, she's been good, so might re-kit the board. smallwoods - 2021-09-05 19:09:00 |
14 | Mums Panasonic sound was bad so we gave her a sound bar and it improved significantly. aoc1 - 2021-09-05 19:09:00 |
15 | Well the trick is to go into the shop and LISTEN before you buy. Worked for us???????? Edited by nice_lady at 7:27 pm, Sun 5 Sep nice_lady - 2021-09-05 19:26:00 |

And then on the other hand there are people like me who wouldn't even dream of settling for something as crap as a soundbar. stevexc - 2021-09-05 19:33:00 |
17 | Exactly, our sound is running through an '80s hi-fi amp into some '70s hi-fi speakers. Cheap, but excellent sound. tygertung - 2021-09-05 22:09:00 |
18 | Actually, the built in amplifier on pretty much all televisions is probably actually perfectly fine, it is just the speakers which are insufficient. If one was handy enough they could open up the telly, unsolder the wires from the speaker terminals and put in a socket to hook up some external speakers. Or they could put in a jack socket which disconnects the internal speakers when the speaker jack is plugged in. tygertung - 2021-09-05 22:11:00 |

I feel like I was part of that debate then, and I disagreed with you then and I disagree with you now. YOU find not needing a sound bar perfect for YOUR needs. Great. Of course a sound bar is not "essential", the only way it would be "essential" is if a TV had no speakers whatsoever. In saying that, you literally have to be deaf to not hear the difference between even a basic sound bar and the speakers in pretty much any TV out of the box when it comes to overall sound quality. I definitely did not buy a "really really really shitty TV" when we upgraded to our 65" 4K TV last year, but we found after getting the TV home that we wanted to improve the sound a bit more, so went and spent another $800 or so on a sound bar. We absolutely notice every time if the sound bar is not on. Could we have survived without a sound bar? Sure. Would we ever go back to not having one, or at least some kind external speaker system? No way. Edited by cube_guy at 10:44 pm, Sun 5 Sep cube_guy - 2021-09-05 22:42:00 |
20 | I have never heard a TV with decent built in speakers. tygertung - 2021-09-05 23:22:00 |
21 | I have a Samsung Frame and I find the speakers in those fine for most stuff, news etc but if watching a movie I really like the extra bass and surround provided by a sound bar, or amp etc. king1 - 2021-09-06 00:05:00 |

Good ideas, or the manufacturers could put the speakers at the front of the set, but that would spoil the look! amasser - 2021-09-06 09:09:00 |

Yeah, any decent speakers have to be reasonably bulky. but if one was wishing to install a TV in a certain place, some larger speakers might not be such an issue. Good amplifier modules are actually very small and cheap these days, so the manufacturer would likely have a good one built into the TV. tygertung - 2021-09-06 09:48:00 |

I think you'll find most/all tv's have a jack/out socket. Ours does. If I wanted to I'd hook some better speakers - perhaps amplified ones but I don't. $800 for 'sound bar'.........yeah - nah. nice_lady - 2021-09-06 09:50:00 |

I don't think you understand my suggestion. My suggestion was to use the televisions internal amplifier to power some external speakers, bypassing the internal speakers. It would cost very little to implement for someone with some minimal electrical skills. Personally I would not consider buying an expensive sound bar, but use a proper stereo system, or just some stereo speakers using the televisions internal amplifier. tygertung - 2021-09-06 10:30:00 |

I seriously doubt I'd bother with rewiring the internal speakers on my TV. Hubby says he used to do that sort of stuff years ago. But anyway a jack cable from the TV to some speakers would be fine. Theres many speakers you can buy for very low cost which contain amps. Or otherwise jack out - to amp - to speakers. It would be easy to do and very cheap. These sound bars at $800 are just OTT. Nice if that's what you want I guess but theres many easy and cheap alternatives. I don't want 'cinema sound' in my lounge thanks. nice_lady - 2021-09-06 11:11:00 |
27 | going black could be capacitors in power supply gone all pop, but needs limmited knowhow in electronics soldering skills . I fixed a cmv monitor that went black with the best caps money can buy from digikey cost me 36 bux for caps monitor is worth only about that but hey i recon it probably will work still 20 years later now. intrade - 2021-09-08 13:26:00 |
28 | The issue can sometimes be is that more modern electronics use ROHS components which mean lead free solder, which is much harder to work than old skool lead solder. tygertung - 2021-09-08 13:49:00 |
29 | My tv sound is crap--flat. What did they say dear. Said put ya $%%^&n hearing aids in. That fixed it haha. Stop shouting at me dear!!. I'm not shouting. Edited by yz490 at 2:03 pm, Wed 8 Sep yz490 - 2021-09-08 14:02:00 |
30 | It's the location of the speakers is the problem re poor sound quality with most TVs. houseofdad - 2021-09-08 14:39:00 |
31 | Just open up the TV and wire in some jacks so you can use external speakers from the internal amplifier, bypassing the internal speakers. tygertung - 2021-09-08 17:02:00 |
32 | TV speakers & smart tv's with failing apps 2 things I find really easy to deal with Any suitable PC can do a better job then the apps by acting as a media center Any reasonable household stereo system works well as a speaker system for the tv Problem is ppl either can't be bothered or don't want the extra gear near the tv or have been suckered in to thinking the tv is stuffed when the apps won't update mrfxit - 2021-09-09 11:11:00 |

35 | Some of the streaming devices are fairly good too. Plugged an Apple 4K TV in to my old Panasonic Plasma and it got a whole new lease on life. Kept using the Apple 4K TV even after I sold the Plasma for a big OLED. LG sure produce a heck of a nice OLED but their apps were garbage (they're ok after a few recent updates). Disclaimer: I'm not an Apple fanboy so don't start. stevexc - 2021-09-09 12:06:00 |
36 | I love my Sonos soundbar, probably the best upgrade for sound and streaming that i have ever bought. Thanks also to Alexa. marcos1 - 2021-09-09 12:32:00 |

39 | My Philips 32" stopped working. There were three bulging capacitors. Bought some more from Jaycar for $7 and soldered them in. trade4us2 - 2021-09-12 13:36:00 |
