Laptop that wont support an M.2 NVME SSD?

1 | Ive just replaced a faulty SSD in this laptop, but windows 10 setup wont detect it during install, I originally thought that I may have needed to sideload the driver during install, but its not the issue. Turns out that windows setup detects the old SSD just fine, and after a closer look on the label it says "SATA" on it. At first glance I just thought it was just a normal M.2 NVME SSD so ordered a new one to replace. I know M.2 specifcation allows for a SATA port, but such drives are very uncommon and ive never come across one before. Either way, the specs on the HP website dont seem to be of much help as to whether or nor it supports such a drive, model is an HP 15s-du0030tu Edited by nzoomed at 2:41 pm, Wed 1 Sep nzoomed - 2021-09-01 14:41:00 |
2 | You had a fiddle in the bios to see if the system actually recognises it's there ? nice_lady - 2021-09-01 15:03:00 |
3 | had one of these situations a month or so ago - needed one of these difference is the sata interface as against NVME, has the same lower speed as a 2.5" ssd ie 500ish Mbps king1 - 2021-09-01 16:09:00 |

5 | oddly enough the crucial website only lists 2.5" sata drives as compatible Edited by king1 at 5:22 pm, Wed 1 Sep king1 - 2021-09-01 17:22:00 |

Yes I was on there too. Ironically this laptop has no internal SATA bay to even install one of these drives! king1 wrote:
Yes I would have bought that drive as a first option, but not in stock so I went with a cruical. It didnt even occur to me at the time that an NVME drive wouldnt work. Edited by nzoomed at 5:40 pm, Wed 1 Sep nzoomed - 2021-09-01 17:37:00 |
9 | Yup SATA M.2 has two keyways, NVME has one. You can put SATAs in an NVME socket with relevant performance hit, but not the other way around. ronaldo8 - 2021-09-01 17:57:00 |
