How to get Windows 10 to update?

#Post
1

I've tried to get Windows 10 to upgrade from version 1909 four times using the "Windows Update Assistant" programme. Each time it takes hours and it seems to have no effect.

And after doing the update, the computer takes at least 20 minutes to boot, and when it finally does boot, the "winver" programme outputs version 1909.

The built in windows update doesn't seem to do it, this programme I downloaded from microsoft doesn't seem to work, how else can I get it to update?

as I suggested in the other thread...
did you use the USB stick rather than running directly?
and have you had a look in the upgrade log file for errors?

When it fails there is no magical cure, there is a reason and you need to investigate to ascertain the reason...

generic cure all type responses are...
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
CHECK the HDD with hdsentinel...
scan for and remove malware
then remove any security/AV while upgrading

Log files can give more specific and definitive reasons why it failed though...

Strange that your Win10 doesn't automatically. Mine come through too often for my liking and I have to log back on when it has finished. MS updates for my old Win7 decided last week to do a download and then at the finish said 'sorry updates and security patches expired in Jan 2020'; weird.

Yeah the log file is a 2 Mb text file and full of errors. Not sure where to start there.

Just using Windows defender, so don't have any third party antivirus.

This might help
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/
log-files

also check
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\DISM.log
