A black and white laser and take your rare colour prints to a bureau.

Yes laser (non colour) printer is cheap to run. Maybe a separate ink jet for the odd colours prints and for doing scans. It will depend on how many prints you are doing a month for which printer.

if all your mostly going to use it for text then go for a b&w laser printer - if you add scanning / copying into the mix then look for a laser printer / scanner / copier

Me - i have a brother DCP-1610w ....it was quick and easy to setup & can be connected via wifi if i want it away from the computer which at times ( kids photocopying ) can be a bonus , its toner ( ink ) can do roughly 1500 pages and being a laster .... it needs a drum unit - that can do 10,000 ... going from the blurb on the box - ive had my printer almost 3 years and have yet to replace the drum but aftermarket toner & drum are around $14+shipping and the drum $28+shipping so works out great costwise

There is no white, you print black.
The paper is white.
It makes no difference whether you buy ink or laser but you need to check cost per page first. Thats the catch, far too many printers don't cost too much but the toner or ink is utterly ripoff and do bugger all pages.

Do your research properly.

I have always stuck with Brother laser for black printing. The toner (ink) cartridge is separate from the drum and I find that by the time I need a new drum it's cheaper to by a new (cheapest) printer. A system that has served me well for very many years. Other brands of laser printer combine the drum and toner, so you end up buying a new drum every time you need toner.

For a colour inkjet consider the epson eco tank - it has integral ink tanks that you fill from bottles - ink cost is way cheaper than ink cartridges. The printer itself is more expensive but per page printing cost is a lot less
I have the ET4700 which includes a sheet feed scanner as well

Yes, eco tank printers are great, our Epson has been faultless and cheap to run for about 5 years, there are now several others on the market.

Just cost me $25 incl postage for 6 full sized cartridges for our Canon PIXMA printer.

Ink is only expensive if you buy OEM . There's really no need to throw away money like that.

65XL Eco HP Black Cartridge
$34.99
300 pages.

This is the sort of thing you need to look at.
I look for $12 or so, less even...and at least 1500 pages.
Which is possible, but you have to do your research.

Just being pedantic, the large commercial printers often have a white ink cartridge.

Cost per cartridge is often dependent on the specific printer's firmware restrictions.
If it will allow aftermarket toners, then cost per cartridge can be a fraction of the OEM cartridges.

Most printers are ok & I suspect it's mostly Ink printers that can be restrictive on genuine cartridges.

Canon LBP6000 Laser printer.
$25 including freight for 1500 page toners
OEM is around $85 on that printer

Generally the most reliable brands are Canon/ HP/ Brother & Epson
HP being the most common brand

Wouldn't touch kyocera or Lexmark unless it was near new & perfect working condition, then throw it away when it gives any trouble.
Every single one of those that comes in, is stuffed.
