#Post

hi I have an HP laptop which has locked itself and I cannot get past it. when updating it went to restart as they do and it suddenly went to a message saying it does not recognise my pin number. Then it said click here to reset pin. I did that and nothing happened. I have not been able to get any further.I took thebattery out and back in again still not budging. I cannot get in to reset pin and dont know where to go from here. Thanks.

Have you managed to restart it by taking the battery out and then it went to that same troublesome screen again ?

And did you previously have a pin number ?

yes I did have a pin number and yes I did try removing battery. But absolutely nothing happened. I tried everything several times. Thanks for your reply.

You'll need to get inside it and remove the BIOS battery for a few seconds.

Is it when it loads into Windows where it is asking for the pin number? there might be a button to push where you can enter your password instead.

It will not move past the message telling me to reset pin. I do not have a password just a pin. no other buttons. I also tried Esc and Ctrl and nothing happened there either. Tried various buttons on computer but nothing wont budge at all.

To ask again:

It's this the 'usual' prompt to enter the pin number, or does it look a bit different to what you're used to seeing?

It is different. It tells me it does not recognize the pin and then says click here to reset pin. But that does not work. I tried it several times.

nice_lady - you need to ask again! Is there a pin option in Win at all or is this more likely a bios startup. He doesn't say.

Think hard. You may be entering a pin you think you are using but in reality it's a variant and is actually xxxx pin number. Done that before lol

There is no where for me to entre pin it is just a square with the words in. I tried just entering the pin anyway and that did not work. It will not let me enter any pin anywhere.

Ok.
How soon after you start up does this message appear ?

nice_lady - 2021-08-03 14:45:00

Id suggest you get into the advanced startup options.

To do this press the start button. Give it about 8 seconds then press and hold the start button until it shuts off. Do this three times then on the 4th don't shut it off. That should get you into the advanced menu.

From there you can 'reset' the PC to before the update. Just take care to choose the correct option to reset it because if you choose the wrong option you can wipe it so that all your stuff will be gone and you're back to basic/plain windows.

These are the exact words, "something happened and your pin isn't avaliable Click to set up your PIN again." then below that it says "set up my pin" That is all. I clicked on set up my pin. It said wait a moment. did a little twiddle for a few seconds and went straight back to the above message. It does that every time I try it. I cannot get passed this. message.

nice__lady it happens almost straight away

Ok it's possibly nothing to do with Windows. Could be a bios issue. This means the bios will need to be reset maybe. What's the make and model of the machine?

It's a laptop ?

Firstly:

When it asks a for a pin just tap enter.

If that doesn't work try

Alt/Ctrl/Del.

Failing that what I said at post# 13.

Report back on result of pls.

Does it say "Windows" anywhere on the screen when you need to put your pin in or "Microsoft" anywhere?

Or can you take a picture of the screen with your "iphone"?

It's possibly not necessary now. But that info is usually on a sticker or printed on the bottom of the machine.

If you can't do that you'll have to take it to a tech.

wow what an insane thread. On the login screen asking for a PIN, click the "SIGN-IN OPTIONS" choose password, and enter your password instead (it's the microsoft account password).

its standard windows login options. On a machine thats been MS account linked. Which the fact OPs using a PIN, is highly likely.

Another thing would be to make sure your PIN (if its numbers) and your laptop has the number pad, is that num lock is on. Or try using the numbers across the top of the keyboard. (assuming you know the correct PIN, but its not accepting it)

Why don't you re-read the thread. Carefully. And take note of what the OP said about what they saw and what they did.

It does not give me a password option. I said in one of my previous posts what the exact words were I was reading. nice_lady I did try your turn off turn on system twice exactly as you said it still did not work. Besides I do not have a password only a pin.

blackhonker - 2021-08-03 20:05:00

bitsnpieces2020 It does not allow me to do anything it will not go to the reset pin option. It did at one stage say did I want to download the app to do this I clicked yes. It twidiled for a few seconds and promptly went back to the same thing. Nothing I have done has worked and I have tried everything twice.

blackhonker - 2021-08-03 20:16:00
41

You need to do the system turn on and off THREE times in a row.

nice_lady - 2021-08-03 20:25:00
42

If you can manage this correctly it'll go to the system advanced startup and it will not go near that page that wants a pin number.

Try any that look likey.
#3 might work.

IF you can get there then you can try some of the following:

Any luck with getting to the Advanced Startup Options ?

nice_lady - 2021-08-04 14:20:00

Does it recognise you typing in to the PIN area or does nothing happen?

loud_37 - 2021-08-04 18:36:00

Is this laptop using a microsoft account sign in or a local account?

If using an online account do you have another laptop/PC which uses the same microsoft log in, you could use this other device to change the password/PIN

loud_37 - 2021-08-04 18:43:00

The OP said that they didn't have a password setup for it - just a pin. Anyway It looks like they've given up ?

So if its an online account use another device and log in to the microsoft account and check the PIN and change it if needed.
