wifi extender

Hi, I have a large single story house - router is in the middle but it doesn't reach the ends. What is the best/easiest to set up wifi extenders? I did have some vodafone supplied ones but with the regular power cuts we get I got sick of the painful setup process and they weren't that great.

I did look at pb tech and a few other sites but want recommendations before buying

My recommendation is to get a TP-link router with one or more external antennae. You can get them turbo cheap second hand now. I am using an old white boxy one with only one antennae and it easily does our large two story house even though it is right down one end and does the garage too.

It stands to reason that one with two or three external antennae should give an even better signal.

You should be easily be able to pick one up for less than ten dollars, so well worthwhile trying that first.

maybe also look at an ethernet over power wifi kit (homeplug etc), mainly because no configuration is required to use... TP Link do some good ones

Ask your broadband supplier for a new modem/router - unless yours is BYOD - and they'll likely agree and lock you into contract for another 12 months. When we got fibre I asked Chorus for a HG659b and the wifi coverage reached both levels of the old house and all of this new one. Your router might just be weak.

Another option is to download a wifi analyser to your phone and these make suggestions for the best channels based on other wifi networks in your neighborhood. This might give better coverage.

Using 802.11G rather than 802.11N should give further range, but at a lower speed.

You can get a cheap TP-Link router with lots of antennae (router only, not modem), plug it into one of the Ethernet ports on your original modem, and turn the wifi off on your original model.

It is worth trying because you can pick up old TP-Link routers which are excellent for almost free.

For a large house its best to data cable back to a central point and install access points on ceiling, e.g., Ubiquiti Unifi and Aruba Instant On. Two or three if required.

Note: If Vodafones super wifi didn't provide a solution I doubt that an extender is the answer.

The OP never mentioned 'super wifi'.

You make a good point, his existing extenders might have been the black "wifi boosters" rather than the "super wifi" TP-Link Deco's which are white or silver.

As their website mentions: "If you’re already a Vodafone customer and have an eligible broadband plan, you can redeem SuperWifi today" which is a 2-pack of extenders and has "wall-to-wall Wifi guarenteed" or they give you a $100 credit. edit: ah, and they lock you in for a 24 month contract...
