to our next town to a well know repair shop. the news wasnt good really. he bascially said it was the hard drive, but then he started talking about std,s or something and he kinda lost me so asked him a few stupid questions that i had written down, and said ok go ahead. he said he would install windows 10 on there, which im a bit worried about but i hope me and the incompetent man of the house will be able to work around that and understand it. so he quoted me 285. then he said what about your photos , do u want them. and im like f$k. photos. do i want them. so i was humming and arrghhhing cause i just didnt know what to do. so i said how much xtra for that and he said a hundred dollars. so its going to be 385 all up. and he said basically iv got a brand new fresh computer with windows 10.

NO you wont have a 'new computer' at all. You'll have the exact same old one with a new hard drive in it. He's talking about putting in an SSD drive. Solid state drive. Very fast and also they're not expensive the drive might be worth $100 at most. It'll make the computer seem a lot faster to do stuff though - it is an upgrade.

well yeah i did understand about not being "exactly" the same computer, and i'll get the same tower back , but everything will be wiped clean. and i wouldnt have been able to put windows 10 on it myself. so is that price not reasonable? not that it matters now i guess. it was either that or buy a new one.

Yeah well I understand you couldn't put windows 10 on it yourself as you don't know how. IT's pretty easy really but anyway not everyone can do that stuff. The device wont be 'wiped clean' the new hard drive simply wont have anything from the old drive on it. I'm intrigued that he said he can retrieve the photos but the existing hard drive is dying.

Price for work is hard to determine really. It would take him about an hour to an hour and a half maybe, to do it all and the SSD might be worth $100.

yeah i know what you mean about the photos, but it was no use me questioning him on that casue i would have had no idea what he would of been talking about. im hoping he will give me a itemised docket of just what he did do so i can keep for my records. is that a reasonable question asking for that?

If you want to recover the photos, you can clone the old hard drive onto an SD card, or memory stick or something, then run the photorec programme, and it will recover any files you want. That is a good way to recover files from a damaged drive, the downside is the filename of the files is lost, they will just be given a number.

But really, you might be able to open the old box, pull out the old drive, go down to a computer shop and ask them for a compatible drive, bung it in, and download a windows 10 installation programme and put it onto a USB flash drive, then bung it in your computer, and push the correct button on your keyboard (maybe F1 or F10 or F11, or maybe Del) to get the computer to boot off the USB drive. Then just follow the instructions on the Windows 10 installation programme.

If she wants more specific details, she can ask. I could even do a free video conference with her to walk her through the entire process if she wants.

I doubt the OP has much idea of what you're talking about let alone the confidence to follow your suggestions. Let her be. The computer is already at the Tech shop.

Are you completely tone deaf??
Do you not understand the original poster isn't able to do any of that or do you simply see this as an opportunity for you to flap your gums?

The thing is already at the shop, she wanted to know if she was getting value for money, not some creep invitation to video conference with a who the hell knows what.

WTF is wrong with you.

I am suspicious, slow isn't a hard drive issue, it's normally bloat.

Anyway he was probably talking about SSDs, Solid State Drives which are the newer smaller ones that have no mechanical parts unlike sata drives.
And STD is a venereal disease.

You should back up your own documents, photos etc all the time.
Hard drives do die you know.
Get yourself a portable drive and back up regularly and DON'T Leave it plugged in.

I would ask him exactly what are you getting for $385 BEFORE he carries out the work, I haven't seen anything written by you stating you're getting an ssd, it could be an hdd for all we know. Also will windows 10 be activated?

morning. man rang last night, and again told me about the things he has done and getting a "new" computer again. he said to me did i want him to install a virus program on for 49 dollars. but i asked him bout windows defender and he said thats not as good. i said i was really hoping for something basic and free for my virus programme as im spending a lot to get this fixed. ( well its a lot to me, but if it gives me a few years i will be happy). so i said i would leave the virus install for now, and i will ask u guys later, lol, about free ones when i get this home. i said i was worried about the layout of windows 10, but he said its better and id be ok..and he put all my photos back on for me, which i probably didnt NEED, but anyway its done now. but i have to go out for the morning. going on a expedition with my uncle and some oldies from the rest home. thanks for replies.

Assuming he's an honest tech then he's run a diagnostic on the drive, discovered it's not healthy, managed to retrieve your photos, (which is good), but decided not to try to just clone the drive onto a new one - perhaps because it's really not in good enough shape. So he's going to install Windows 10. That's great. You don't really need to pay for any kind of A/v program - Windows defender is fine. I can't say whether the one he wanted to install would be better because I have no idea what that was. Personally I've never paid for an A/v program and very very very rarely got any kind of virus or similar anyway.

I agree, You made the right decision on the anti virus. You don't need a third party software.

Remember if the computer dies you can use the ssd in any other pc via housing or un tower plugged in The price seems ok As some people here think they should only be paid but no one else should get paid nothing for there work. Just be carful to not visit of The P or gambling etc sites not to click on links on emails etc . If you want to be save and have no clue about computers apple mac is the best option. My mother uses apple tablet as i told her to use that She dont knows about linux .Android tablets are also save solong as you still get updates.
For windows The defender is good enough because the system is unsafe compared to any other by default.
I have not used any antivirus since 2003 with linux kanotix. But you need to learn comands for linux and know how it operates as where on mac its all done for you at way more cost however.
Good news is windows will one day be a version of linux the way things are going.

Yeh true. I guess he's not in the habit of installing an OS that wouldn't be activated. I just remember trouble I had. I had two identical laptops, both win 10 and both activated, and I swapped the hdds and one didn't activate after the swap.

omg..i have just got home plugged the tower in EXACTLY how it was and my screen is dead. it wont turn on. the mouse light is going . the keyboard is going. and the blue light is going on the tower. u know that hard blue plastic piece that goes in the back and it has the funny little wind down two screws on it, well does that have to be pushed in really tight, or has that got nothing to do with the screen.?.

The blue VGA cable should be plugged in properly otherwise the screen won't get the signal from the computer. I've had that issue before.

That's close to an itemized account of what he's done I'd say, ( without him mentioning the diagnostics he's done....)

And IE has been officially retired it still works of course but Microsoft want people to stop using it. It's unsupported now.

In firefox you have to set each website font size (zoom) individually. Once you set it it should stay that size. If I go to facebook the font size is 100% yet if I go to TM the size is 170%. Once set they should stay the size they've been set too.

It only appears to be TM that you have to zoom in. But once set it should stay that size.

Just installed chrome and it appears to be the same as firefox. Once you set the zoom it should stay the size you set it too.

tech seems fine. an SSD does make a computer "go like new again". because they are fast.
Almost any pay for AV is better than windows defender. Windows defender is very good at telling you nothing is wrong while you've got a virus, or saying its got a virus it cannot clean /fix. Or saying a file is a virus when its not. At that price I expect he is selling you ESET nod32 which is far superior to windows defender. (Don't beleive me, google it). Also for price $100 SSD I expect its a 500GB drive at most. If you've got a 1TB drive its more like $200

The OP didn't say what the SSD drive was priced at.

I guessed $100, taking into consideration the total quote cost. Windows A/v is fine. Check the reviews. Eset is better.
