| Did you get professional movers and packers? What was your experience with it. How were your pictures and paintings packed? Just interested to hear what it was like for other movers. omaria - 2021-07-25 14:09:00 |
| I just bought stuff for the new house and dumped the old or left it behind toyboy3 - 2021-07-25 15:34:00 |
| We packed ourselves and used professional movers to do the move. We took most precious items in the car. Went well, but washing machine didn't survive. Had to buy a new one. zsazsa777 - 2021-07-25 22:56:00 |
| I packed very precious stuff and took with me. rest was packed by movers as my new employer paid for it. Some things I did my set like boxes of books to save cost as I had to pay extra over a certain amount fromnature - 2021-07-26 09:09:00 |

| Did anyone use packers or movers to pack everything? omaria - 2021-07-26 11:54:00 |
| We did. We were only moving to another local suburb but we had to store our stuff for a few weeks before we could take possession of our new home. After looking into storage we figured we may as well pay the removalists to do the lot. It was well worth it for us. I sat with a coffee, with my feet up, and watched them expertly and safely pack everything up far more efficiently and securely than we could have done ourselves. Three weeks later it was all delivered to our new home. They put the furniture into the appropriate rooms, and we unpacked the boxes ourselves, then called them to come and pick up the boxes and packing material. One small piece of damage to a lamp-shade but everything else perfect. I suspect had we done it all ourselves we would have incurred more mishaps! I sold a house in Auckland where I'd lived for 17 years, and got professionals in to pack and ship everything down to Wellington. I loved the experience - the team came with all the right sized boxes, bubble-wrap, newsprint paper etc and did it all. After I unpacked everything in the new house, they came and took away all the boxes and wrapping materials. pasadena1 - 2021-07-27 19:05:00 |
| I've done both. Packed myself, used independent owner operator, also had pro company and packers. lythande1 - 2021-07-29 08:32:00 |
| I’ve always just rounded up a bunch of friends with trailers, it’s so quick and easy that way. One or two loads each and we’re in. rmdstar - 2021-07-29 10:13:00 |
| I’m watching this thread with interest. I really hate shifting and would really prefer to pay someone to pack and shift it all, then someone else to clean it???????? thumbs647 - 2021-08-01 09:07:00 |

Be careful who you get, we moved from Auckland to the south island, paid an extra $700 to have everything packed. Lots of damage, broken beer bottles ruining 2 mattrasses, pictures in picture boxes not individually wrapped, broken frame, scratched frames, grandkids canvasses damaged. Stuff left behind in kitchen drawers, and contents from 1 cupboard. They did pick it up after we called and we still wait for it to arrive supposedly on another container. After that we discovered all my baking gear was left in the drawer below the oven. Just so stressed and sick of it that I decided not to bother with it anymore and just buy new. Yet the company came highly recommended. Monetary value was not huge, we got $400 access, but the heartbreak and stress to see how our belongings are treated cannot be compensated for. The men who came to deliver our container could not believe what they found, how shoddy it was packed and stacked and the stink of beer...... nough said. 13 | Had my employer pay once so had the full mover experience. Some stuff was left behind, and a couple of breakages, and a bit of logic failure with perishable items which should have got to our temporary accommodation put into long term storage. Overall ok though. Second time we were a bit broke, so packed ourselves and hired a truck. didn't forget anything, but we did damage a headboard. Third move was done with friends and a trailer. Exhausting day, but no breakages and nothing forgotten. If I had a choice I'd probably pay movers, but supervise based on my experiences. benthecat - 2021-08-02 14:09:00 |
| Also, recently helped inlaws move after 50 years in one house. They used movers, but weren't well prepared for how a move works. The finer details, like all the contents of drawers in the furniture would be removed and packed in boxes - oops - what will we wear tomorrow? (motel overnight), which items to supervise the packaging of - heirloom clock had pendulum busted with wadding and cost over $1,000 to fix, and other little learned knowledge. benthecat - 2021-08-02 14:13:00 |
| we had our clock extra insured for $1500 but that was very well packed. Just now pulled out another painting that actually has a hole in it. Not huge in value as I painted it myself, but to think 'professionals' can be so careless. omaria - 2021-08-02 15:39:00 |
| I've used movers twice when a job transfer meant my employer was picking up the tab. Both times were very smooth, items super well packed, stacked and transported. It was very expensive (many thousands), but definitely professionally done. Edited by cinderellagowns at 6:53 pm, Mon 2 Aug cinderellagowns - 2021-08-02 18:49:00 |
| Why on earth would you bother having beer bottles packed and transported Omaria? (They shouldn't have ended up broken if packed properly, but still, why?) cinderellagowns - 2021-08-02 18:52:00 |

Good question. We were told to leave everything for them to pack. My husband had a box of beer and was told they take care of it......obviously they didn’t. omaria - 2021-08-02 19:21:00 |
| We used movers to pack everything when we shifted cities for work and the employer was picking up the bill, everything was well packaged and we had only a couple of very minor breakages, but their inventory was a complete joke… each box was labeled with the last thing that went into it rather than the main thing eg we had a box of towels labeled cutlery because they’d clearly found a teaspoon in the bottom of the linen cupboard, made for fun times unpacking, what you were opening up was a complete lottery and boxes were in all the wrong rooms! The other thing was that when they delivered everything to the new house I was given a checklist to mark box numbers off as they brought them in, but rather than everything coming in via the front door somethings came in via the garage and some via the ranch slider round the back and numbers were just yelled from wherever they were… when we got to the end and there were a few numbers missed they just shrugged their shoulders and said well the container is now empty so they must be here somewhere and left, dunno why they bothered labeling everything, it was just a time consuming and meaningless exercise! Everything did show up eventually, but if they were just going to say well it’s all here somewhere rather than locate every number before leaving there really wasn’t any point in numbering everything. rowlf - 2021-08-03 07:29:00 |
| yes rowlf. we had boxes that had obviously been previously used and old labels not removed, so what ended in the bedroom was for the kitchen and what ended in the bathroom was for the lounge etc. It would have been so simple to cross off the old contents and write the correct items/room. For us it has been a complete nightmare, never again. Picture boxes just had all frames, paintings etc thrown in together with no protection between them, hence damage, scratches, broken frame etc. Edited by omaria at 10:23 am, Tue 3 Aug omaria - 2021-08-03 10:22:00 |
| We pack everything ourselves and move it ourselves. Can hire students and a truck also to help move furniture. The house is no problem, the big issue is the workshop. tygertung - 2021-08-03 12:24:00 |

This is what I will probably do when I move intercity. Did it cost much more than doing it yourself, do you know? spidermurti - 2021-08-03 16:40:00 |
