New kitchen where would you put microwave?

#Post
1

We’ve had plans drawn up and the only options are under the Island or in the bifolding pantry which is two meters long and has a bench top, which would you least dislike?

I’d stick it in the pantry. I didn’t use mine much.

I guess it depends how much you use?

Does your kitchen need redoing already? Ours is 10/11 years old but am hoping it’s going to last much longer!

The first thing that will be replaced is the sink, ceramic job and dishwasher.

On a bench in the pantry - for me, bending down under a bench would be a pain in the ... back?

We haven’t had one for a while but I do want one again as I miss the convenience. We are altering the House, to make it more open, kitchen and lounge will be open to each other other and putting an Island in and reusing some of the existing kitchen in a space we will rent out. I think under bench seems awkward but then don’t want it taking up too much bench space in the pantry also nuisance to gave to open doors

I would put it in the pantry, either on a shelf or with one above it, and with another power point at the other end of the bench so its a useable /useful space. Under the island would be awful, imagine bending over every time you want to put something in, stir, check, get something out or actually clean the microwave.

We're planning on redoing our very old kitchen. Under the Island, I'd put something like a small drinks fridge, and/ or just cupboards for storage of large platters or serving things that aren't used every day. Also, don't forget to put power points in the island so you can use small appliance on it.
My ideal place for a microwave would be integrated into a bank of wall ovens... money and space dependent.

If you don't want to bend down to get stuff in and out of the microwave, then the pantry it will have to be. However, be aware you need to leave ventilation space around it.

thats interesting, we have a pull up electrical point in our island and I hate the thing! One day if I get a new bench I will get rid of it.

Interesting how we are all different.

I also can’t stand insinkerators. Mr lv used to use ours just to annoy me and then it broke haha so I now live in peace. ????

It really comes down to what you want. If i was in your situation I would put it under bench as I value my pantry space too much. Yes you have to bend down to access what is in it but we had to for ovens before eyelevel. I would also find it more of a pain to have to open pantry doors to use it than bend a little bit.

thats a good point.

I wonder if sliding pantry doors is a better option? I guess it depends how big the pantry is and how tall/short the people using it are. I am reasonably tall so I prefer not to bend down if I can avoid.

oh, no I wouldn’t have a pull up one, that would annoy me too! Just a couple on one side, under bench top… on a side that you wouldn’t see all the tlme.

yeah that’s why they went for the pull up one because there is nowhere else to put it without looking too obvious.

Anyway I hate it lol. It’s really just a FWP and I will be making the bench last as long as possible! It’s a shiny white Formica. It has worn quite well considering the use it gets which is a LOT.

I'd put it in the pantry.

I can't stand microwaves which are either up high or down low.

On the bench where its supposed to be, where its safe to use.

I've just had a new kitchen installed. Difficult design in a smaller space. My microwave is in a cupboard above the pantry which consists of 4 large pull out blum drawers. The microwave cupboard which has a push open and closes automatically at the push of a button. I enjoy not having to see it or bend over to it as previously under the bench.. I'm shrinking with age so wanted to endure it was at a safe height. It's perfect.

In the pantry. We have ours on a bench in a cupboard with other electrical appliances. That way they're all out of sight when not in use and is just the right height so I don't have to bend down or stretch up to use it.

What about a combo oven? Instead of a separate microwave.

Any toddlers or preschoolers in your house? They would rule out the kitchen island option!

Anyway, I have my microwave on the bench, next to the main oven. It's easy and safe.
I could have it in the pantry, but it would be a pita. It's handy when thawing meat to cook, and my microwave grills as well so I use it for quick things like chicken nuggets and fish fingers for the kids.

We're all so different. I had a wall oven when I did a new kitchen at my last house, with an induction hob. Hated them and was thrilled with the old floor standing gas cooker when I moved into my current house earlier this year!
I'm planning a few tweaks to the kitchen at the moment, but am definitely keeping my nice old oven.

no, but i wouldn't be letting them use the microwave anyway, I could just leave it on the bench but I'm looking for a more streamlined modern clutter free look... I also want some glass fronted cabinets, but am trying to talk myself into a more modern look lol

We just did our kitchen last year and the microwave was a sticking point. In the end we just left it out on the bench as we use it daily. Luckily we have enough benchtop space. Drawers under the island are way more valuable for storage. we could have put it in the pantry which has a sliding door but just would have got annoyed having to open all the time.
Funny about the negative comments about the pop-up power point as we put one in and love it. We didn't want the safety hazard of cords over the side of the bench, especially if there are little ones in the house.

You can always put it in the laundry if there is space.

Ours is in the pantry on the benchtop and I use it a lot. All my electrical appliances are in the same cupboard with several power points. I open the bifold doors when using the microwave, close them the rest of the time so the kitchen looks neat and tidy. Only thing you need to be aware of is that microwave is not too deep for the cupboard.

Mine had a specially built space, above the specially built space for the wall oven.

That would not work for me, my laundry is downstairs and kitchen is upstairs. I still would not put it in my laundry, I don’t like laundry appliances in the kitchen either.

we have a small walk in pantry, and that is where our microwave, and benchtop oven live. I like uncluttered benches, so the less stuff out in the main kitchen area, the better.

I'd say if your pantry had the space, put the microwave in there.

In the pantry as I prefer at bench height,

I’m doing my kitchen soon and going for on the bench, but am going to get a smaller one which does microwave, convection and air fry in one, and get rid of my large microwave and other appliances

I think that's what we'll do as it also streamlines the kitchen, i think the only thing i might have on the bench is a coffee maker.
How far are you along, we have a guy that does the design and install and does beautiful work...
WE are though looknig at next year now as permit took ages and a month long argument with the council over some details and the covid!!

If the rumours of skyrocketing costs, hold ups due to tradesmen shortages, supply problems, freight bottlenecks and of course the affects of COVID around the world are true I’d be very nervous tackling anything like your project at the moment...
( ????we completed a new kitchen, bathroom, laundry remodel on the day before the last lockdown! Keep thanking the universe for enabling us to get it done in time!)

Best of luck to you, I hope you share your experiences with us, it’s exciting and scary all at the same time!

Our microwave used to live in its special nook hung under the cupboards above the kitchen bench, until there were some shoulder injuries! Now it is at waist height on the bench and the cookbooks live in the nook. Waist height is the best. So I would go for the pantry bench, or the kitchen bench.

Just started, as in got one quote and awaiting a couple more.

Mines pretty simple tho, just replacing the big bench with new and a couple of new cupboards on the back, pretty much like for like (without chipped door fronts lol).. so luckily no permits needed! I’m waiting on quote from a place recommended a few times on titirangi fb page.

No major rush, will prob wait till Xmas as not that far away and buy major appliances in sales.

Was looking at the breville 3 in one, I have a smeg convection mw now which is great, but big!!!

We won't quit now, we've spent $10k already, that would be a waste.
I expect prices to rise too, it is what it is.

I would sit it on top because microwaves produce water steam and that could cause water and mold build up behind the microwave and make the cabinets swell.
