Check check on plan to upgrade/fix a gaming PC

#Post
1

Anybody familiar with gaming PCs able to sanity check my plan to fix/upgrade my daughters gaming PC which died today?

She has a MSI B150M ProVD Micro ATX LGA1151 M/B and Intel i3-6100 3.7 Ghz CPU. Fans/PSU all going, but M/B showing a single red light on the troubleshoot LED, which indicates CPU failure. Pulled the CPU out, and was going to reset, but my clumsy hands think I damaged the pins on the socket anyway.

Looking on TradeMe, used CPU's for LGA1151 socket are more expensive than newer/faster 10th gen Comet Lake LGA1200 socket i3's from PBTech or somewhere, so plan is:

New CPU: Intel i3 Intel Comet Lake Core i3 10105F 4 Core 3.7Ghz, LGA 1200. $168.
New M/B: MSI MAG B460M PRO-VDH WIFI mATX Motherboard For Intel 10th Gen, LGA 1200 - $175.

I think the mATX case with blingy fans/lights, the DDR4 2133 RAM, and GTX 1050Ti 4GB can all be reused.

So I think for ~$300, PC can be fixed and upgraded a bit (the new 10th gen i3 is over twice as fast as the old i3 looking at CPU rating's).

But will Windows 10 install be happy with CPU/Motherboard transplant?

Assuming i buy from a computer shop like PB, will they fit the CPU into the MB along with paste and fan? WIll ping them in the morning but wondering how much it would cost vs doing it myself. Little worried about damaging pins on the new gear...

They don't use pins anymore on CPUs so it isn't much of an issue. But really is an i3 going to be fast enough for a gaming PC? I'd have thought you'd want at least an i5?

Drop down to a 10100f and save $20 for virtually the same performance

Otherwise looks like a good plan

There are still pins to bend, they're just on the mb now rather than the CPU

10th gen i3 is 4C/8T and only a little slower than a 9th gen i5. More than enough for a system with a 1050Ti

They have contact pads and the cpus just drop in place, so should be no issue as long as one is gentle. Although maybe they are less robust now. Most modern socket I recently worked on was a 1155.

64 GB of DDR4 is ideal given the memory leaks firefox has.

Daughters play Overwatch and a bunch of other games. The GPU helps of course, but yeah, they were getting by with the old CPU

About that being gentle.. I lifted the CPU in position then dropped it a few cm with one corner facing down.. the motherboard now has a few contact pads bent :-(

Why the hell would you 'drop a cpu a few cm' ??

That's probably not the reccomended install procedure - and it's not going to be gentle.

See my original post re clumsy hands..

I rushed it a bit and even from about a couple of cm, it took a visible chunk out of the contact pads on the socket. Hence the inverted smile.

Picked up the new CPU and motherboard today. PB fitted the CPU & CPU fan into the board on the spot, so daughter is getting out the case now. Have transferred RAM and getting ready to boot.. but I need to sleep

I found them to be quite good albeit I had to return a faulty laptop but they refunded me the moment they knew it couldn't be repaired. They didn't push another laptop onto me they simply said they could help me out when I was ready to purchase again.
