Spelling check in Firefox

#Post
1

I have Firefox 89.0.2. When I am typing in a window like this, sometimes it takes many seconds to show a spelling error. Sometimes it complains about a word such as feijoa. What is happening? There are no other applications running.

In my computer I have chosen English (New Zealand) for my Language, Region, and Time Format. Why does the spelling checker use US spellings?

The answer is that there are two different places where the language needs to be specified. That's crazy, but I didn't write the OS and browser!

Do you talk to yourself often? ????????

There is still a delay in spelling check, and some wrong words are not flagged as errors.

Try writing a spelling error, right click on it and then goto languages. You might need to add the NZ dictionary.

There isn't a New Zealand dictionary in the list. There's UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada, US.

It is there but it is under English New Zealand so you need to search under 'E', when you find it click on it and add it to Firefox add ons, Then you simply right click again when writing some text, click on languages again and this time tick English NZ and it should now spell check with the NZ dictionary.

You can even add words to the dictionary if they initially appear to be miss spelt. For instance tamariki had the squiggly red line under it, I right clicked on it and 'added to dictionary' and the squiggly line went away.

The problem has got worse. If a word is wrong and I right click and click on the correct spelling, that word does not replace the word that was spelled wrong. That word stays the same and is not underlined as wrong. Later it might be flagged as wrong.

No, I listed all of the dictionaries for English, and NZ is not there.
I think I have mangaed to add the NZ dictionary.
I have left the wrongly spelled word mangaed to show what is happening. One of those was flagged as an error and the other was not.

Check your user dictionary it's possible you have added some incorrectly spelt words to that dictionary.

But it did eventually flag mangaed as an error. The spelling check seems to be delayed by many seconds sometimes, but takes a fraction of a second most times. I assume it is Firefox doing the check.

So do a search for

persdict.dat

IN your computer.

Use notepad to open that file and you'll be able to see what you've saved in there and edit it as you wish.

This works ^^^ in case you are wondering.

I got there by going to 'this PC', then searched for 'persdict.dat', once it was found right clicked on it and 'open with' notepad and there the words were that I added.

All the names in persdict.dat are correct.
I think there is some other weird problem. This has been happening for years.
I suppose I should mention that I have been using Linux Mint for a month, and Ubuntu for 10 years before that.

Go into firefox add ons and themes and in the search box write NZ dictionary and hit enter. A list of dictionaries should appear, look in the list and NZ English dictionary should be there. Added it and now try right clicking a miss spelled word click on languages and tick NZ dictionary. See if that works.

Oh I see it looks like you have added the NZ dictionary as per post 11. Make sure it is chosen and has the tick beside it.

I have done all that. If I click on a suggested word, that word will not replace the word that is wrong. So I have to type the word out again.
Oh well I suppose I will find the answer one day.

weird. I just tried correcting mangaed and it worked fine. Perhaps you should try to uninstall everything and start again.

Totally uninstall firefox I mean. The one you are using might be corrupt.

If you have a 64bit processor try installing 89.0.2 (64bit) firefox. Unless that's what you were using?

A I said in #1 I am using 89.0.2
If I click on a correct suggestion, it sometimes does nothing. If I click on it again, it puts the corrected word in the line but keeps the wrong word in the line as well.

The spelling software and Firefox (90.0.2) have just been updated, and now the spelling check works correctly!
