Website advice needed please

1 | Hi - not quite sure how to approach this - need some direction/advice please.I currently run a small online business with a website (trademe name will get you there) for which I paid a software licence and pay a mthly hosting fee (US based). I own the images, copy etc. It took me hundreds of hours and a lot of learning to create what I currently have. Over the last couple of years their service/updates/support etc has dropped and now they are asking to almost double the hosting fee to allow my site to be SSL (I have to provide the certificate). I think it's timely to look to move. Have looked at shopify - but it looks like similar amount of work to end up fairly much where I am - no real ownership/control. Also looked at Wordpress and have downloaded it and XAMMP to "play" here - looks like a lot of work! Is it worth doing something like this www.pagecloud.com/blog/2-ways-to-legally-copy-a-website and then finding a suitable NZ based hosting option. OR am I stressing about nothing in that maybe my sales are down because of my poor facebook posts, slack seo etc rather than no SSL smittenforever - 2021-07-01 10:18:00 |
2 | Not having SSL won't be helping, Google is definitely prioritising sites that have SSL, especially when online purchasing involved. You can get free SSL certificates here using Lets Encrypt and ZeroSSL The increased cost is probably due to different plans in effect now, who knows, there is a lot of buyer lockin at play here. If the increase is not too Long term, if your market is NZ you should probably look to an NZ server. The likes of 1stdomains host the major web platforms like wordpress etc but that is definitely hard work in rebuilding it and then managing on your own, and from a tech POV its gets expensive... The likes of shopify etc have advantages in that respect but also the buyer lockin... The website copying like httrack etc only takes a static copy, it might get you all you photos and content in one go but will not allow you to rebuild a functional database driven webstore. I don't know if there are automated ways to do this or even if it is possible with storesonline, someone else might have a better idea - some companies just like to make things difficult... 3 | Thank you king1 - yes mostly NZ customers so will certainly look towards NZ hosting etc. I have all the photos, text etc all saved here its the code around it all thats the hassle. i can even save all the colours, styles, fonts etc just can't get at the actual bits that drive it. Storesonline were great - when doing the original setup the learning curve was horrendous but they were helpful - not so much now - drat. Thanks for your input. smittenforever - 2021-07-01 11:52:00 |
4 | Anyone looking for hosting might notice that Openhost has now followed Domains4less (both NZ owned?) into the clutches of Crazy Domains . . . (?) which is Singapore owned. Now with no substantial NZ based hosting left AFAIK, Namecheap is probably a reasonable bet. We've had reliability, security - and level of tech support never reached by Openhost, and at vastly lower cost. thetechman - 2021-08-26 21:29:00 |

6 | Crazy Domains is operated by Dreamscape Networks International Pte Ltd Openhost, Domains4Less, are owned now by Umbrellar....they were/are part of Webdrive. Umbrellar operates several brands both active and retired.[citation needed] Umbrellar Cloud I used to work there lythande1 - 2021-08-27 08:19:00 |

Don't know that it'll help but if you goto your website using say chrome for example and RIGHT clik in the page somewhere you'll get a menu you can then click on 'view source code'. That gives you a LOT of the 'background' code. The html colour codes and formatting styles and all sorts of stuff. nice_lady - 2021-08-27 08:21:00 |

An email received from OpenHost on 19 August clearly states: [We are pleased to announce that Openhost and its products, services and customer subscriptions have recently been acquired by a leader in the hosting and domain name services field, Crazy Domains.] thetechman - 2021-08-27 14:52:00 |
10 | Wordpress combined with Woocommerce is incredibly easy to use. I've set up clients who are, let's just say "technically challenged" who have picked it up and ran with it. I host them on a dedicated server located in Auckland for snappy performance. My name at the google place if you want to talk more. (I am a freelancer, not an agency so my rates reflect that...) lordtopcat - 2021-08-31 16:55:00 |
