We have an enermet meter attached to a post which needs to be moved. It has National Gas Corporation on the screen face and has a reading in kW/h. The wires from it go into the ground. We think our underground power cable is nearby. There is no gas line in the area. Can anyone explain why it is there?

I photographed it today so will know tomorrow.I have assumed from the state of the wiring that is not in use. Trying to find out why it was ever there and what it attached to under the ground.
