Velocity Valley managing director Simon Short said Rotorua Lakes Council needed to stop allowing motels to be used in this way.

"The second we stop doing that and make a plan, the better. I'm worried there's no end date. They need to say 'we will change things by this date'."

He said in his opinion the Government taskforce that worked with agencies locally didn't find a solution.

"All they came back with was better contracts for motels. There was nothing in there about future-proofing all these rooms being taken up."

He said he wasn't only concerned for Rotorua's visitors but also residents because they might start asking themselves "is Rotorua really the place I want to be because there is too much s**t in town?".

What do they call that?, ???? ah, that’s right, “unintended consequences”...

At least they are shining a torch on the problems that other towns around New Zealand are also experiencing.

It’s a worry.

Children growing up in motels in nz and other countries, children being held in cages in US, children drowning in attempts to reach a "better" country. Adults ought to be rocked to the core by this but they are too busy surviving themselves or playing the stock market, the housing market, cryptomania and digital art...such fun? Phew that was a trigger, could not read the article but read what you posted, good on them for at least speaking out and bringing attention to this idiocy we are calling management.

Yep, how dare the homeless take up beds when they could be helping keep bridges occupied.

I never said they were. Just shining a torch on the other side.

Maybe the disgruntled locals could talk to the motel owners who have been taking significant amounts of taxpayer cash over periods when they would otherwise been empty (lockdown) through to post covid when they'd be working on an average 80% pre-COVID. At the same time nationally hotels have plummeted to 50% occupancy according to the Tourism Industry.

Do any of those examples absolve the parents of the children from responsibility?

Responsibility is there whether it is taken or not taken, its not something that can be absolved from. The children are left living or dying in the consequence either way.

Not sure what that means in practice, but parents who put, or allow to be put, their children in harm's way are the one's to be held to account.

he’s right. As I said a lot of the homeless are from out of town. I was in town the other day and everywhere you go there are scruffy looking people lingering around. Never used to be like that.

Apparently there are now no new homeless motels allowed and they are going to be either for homeless or visitors, not a mix of the two. However, the ‘vibe’ of the town has changed and I don’t see how it will be improved. Our council is to blame for allowing it. I would also like to see the amount of money the motel operators are receiving to house the homeless seriously looked at. The motel owners are laughing all the way to the bank. Money for jam.

Would I be correct in assuming that the running of said establishments would take considerable level of management.

not as much as having different guests arriving every 2 or 3 nights and just how much are they charging MSD per night for these ‘permanent’ ‘guests?

Hmmm no one seems to know……????????????????????

You could lodge an OIA request to find out. Just ensure you word it accurately.

I find it rich that an AirBnB owner is complaining. How many houses have been taken out of the traditional rental pool across the country so they can make more money than actually renting the house as a home?

exactly. They should be rated on commercial rates for operating a commercial business in a residential area. I think they should all have a registration number too so local councils and govt can see exactly who is doing what.
