Linux Lite question

1 | I have been trying various linux distros to find one I like the look and feel of. I am currently playing around with Linux Lite 5.4 on an old spare computer, and cannot get it to connect to the internet. It connects to my wireless ok and shows connected in the taskbar, but when I click to check for updates, it says the computer is not connected to the internet. The same thing happens when I open Firefox which comes preinstalled, it cannot connect and says to check the internet connection, yet there is the icon in the taskbar saying it is connected! Any tips gratefully received. rpvr - 2021-05-11 11:32:00 |

Don't try Windows, there is a reason not to use Windows 10 on an old machine. Did you see this page? It might be able to help you out: https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/network.html tygertung - 2021-05-11 14:22:00 |
6 | Lubuntu is a nice minimalist good looking modern design, try that if Linux Lite doesn't work out for you. tygertung - 2021-05-11 14:23:00 |
7 | or restart the router. Occasionally our router shows an internet connection but it is not connected when we try to open a browser. A router restart fixes it. muppet_slayer - 2021-05-11 14:32:00 |

9 | Thanks for the comments, which I will work through. However since my original post I have installed Linux Lite on an old laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro L300) and it connected flawlessly, so I guess that rules out a router problem. rpvr - 2021-05-11 15:10:00 |

I mean Windows is all lovely and all, I mean it is pretty common, but it might not run too good on an old shitter of a computer. Sometimes it is nice to reduce e-waste and keep old machines trucking along. tygertung - 2021-05-11 15:11:00 |
11 | I must say old Windows aren't such good viewing these days....... Perhaps it's my eyes? nice_lady - 2021-05-11 16:02:00 |
12 | rpvr wrote: Not necessarily. The problem can be occurring on one device and not all so a restart of the router may still fix the connection between it and the router. Why does it happen? God knows. All I know is it can fix a problem device connecting to the router. It has to be one of the cheapest fixes to try as well. muppet_slayer - 2021-05-11 20:32:00 |
13 | Maybe the old shitter has a hardware fault, try windows, see if it works any better. If not, it would suggest a hardware issue. Edited by bitsnpieces2020 at 9:17 pm, Tue 11 May bitsnpieces2020 - 2021-05-11 21:06:00 |
14 | Probably something to do with the driver of the wifi hardware. Edited by lythande1 at 8:06 am, Wed 12 May lythande1 - 2021-05-12 08:04:00 |

17 | lythande1 wrote: You are correct. The computer had no built in wifi and I was using one of those little EDUP USB wifi dongles. This was working fine with Windows and with a couple of other linux distros I tried. I tried another one of the same that I had, and that one did connect, but browsing the net was extremely slow. I then scratched through my old computer stuff and found a DSE docking station, tried that and it connected fine, and net browsing speed is now normal. Seems like the linux drivers in this particular distro are just not great for that particular device. We live and learn. Edited by rpvr at 12:12 pm, Wed 12 May rpvr - 2021-05-12 12:11:00 |
