I have been given a core2duo pc but the hdd has been wiped. The case has activation key for windows7 pro. Can I still get W7, install it and then perhaps upgrade to W10. I just want a machine to 'play with :)

Thank you. Does the activation still work after W7 is no longer supported?

Just install Windows 10 and activate it with the Windows 7 key. This has worked twice for me so far.

Windows 10 can be activated via the windows 7 code. When you install windows 10, say you dont have the code. Just incase windows 10 has already been installed, and will activate if has been.

Well, Lubuntu is real easy to use and works with no config issues and looks much the same as Windows 10, but the OP might prefer Windows.

Now that system is recognised as having windows10 on it and activated, you don't ever need to put the key code in again. So you can fresh install it at any time and not be hassled for the key code. It will activate with a digital license.

No worries, but just to be clear, it will still ask you for the product key when installing but you just click on "I don't have a product key" and it will carry on with the install. When finished installing it will be automatically activated with a digital license.
