Rotorua moteliers fear penalties

| for refusing unwanted emergency housing guests Whole situation is horrific. Kids growing up in motels is sickening. Situation getting worse not better. What will be the repercussions of this in the future? mkr_ahearn - 2021-05-09 16:47:00 |
| Hmm - the bit I don’t understand there is that all these booking websites need a credit card and would be for a specified time. So just charge the card. That’ll stop them. sparkychap - 2021-05-09 17:02:00 |
| mkr_ahearn wrote: I would suggest that those kids are used to living from parcel to post and know no difference, probably the best they have had for a long time. gabbysnana - 2021-05-09 17:10:00 |
| It’s not just Rotorua Motels that have the problem. Our family have found it happening in Motels in the South Island as well. lovelurking - 2021-05-09 17:23:00 |
| I wouldn’t want to stay in a motel with MSD clients in it. Lucky I can’t afford a holiday then innit ???????? lakeview3 - 2021-05-09 17:30:00 |
| I’ve been thinking, ???? ???? If the Motel is leased, it’s probably against the terms of the lease agreement to long term rent anyway. It will more than likely be there somewhere in the fine print, something along the lines of “the only business to operate on the premises will be short term travellers accommodation “ lovelurking - 2021-05-09 17:34:00 |
| This whole situation is a long time in the making. Wheres all my detractors who claimed on here homeless people weren’t a problem? Oh well this is what happens when you flood a country with 500,000 immigrants over a 10 year period and don’t build enough houses. I can’t see any solutions any time soon. Caught between a rock and a hard place. I do think gangs should be banned from them though and efforts to house children away from people with alcohol and addiction issues. In fact ban alcohol and drugs from the premises. We need an empty homes tax, and we need air BNBs rated at commercial rates. We also need safe low maintenance units for older people so they can downsize. There are houses there already, they just aren’t being used to their full potential. lakeview3 - 2021-05-09 17:36:00 |
| What's really annoying is how hard it is to find a vacancy in an affordable motel these days; a lot are booked up solid for months with homeless occupancy. Several times in the past year when looking for accommodation for a night or two I've only been able to find a place at the most expensive establishments when I wanted a mid-range one and I've been told it's because they have long-term bookings for homeless. It's not the fault of the homeless, but is there ANY solution under way for more affordable housing since a lot of 'state houses' have been demolished; at least I know they have around where I live, because they weren't earthquake-safe, apparently. Are there any more proposed to be built? Edited by kitty179 at 5:37 pm, Sun 9 May kitty179 - 2021-05-09 17:36:00 |

LV I was reading the article on Stuff earlier today and was disgusted at the millions of dollars spent in just one quarter! Said to my son why the hell aren't the government buying land and getting houses built - even tiny houses. shelleigh - 2021-05-09 18:42:00 |
| hound31 wrote: i know, i realise that. It’s just there aren’t very many of the, so the options for people are very limited. There was some nice standalone places built in town over the last few years, small, stylish, compact, modern, safe but I think even they were 3 bedrooms. Just townhouses I suppose. Easy maintenance. There was supposed to be a big development like this here but there is still just bare land. I saw someone had sprayed something about the council on one of the fences so it’s looking like that could be the reason for the delay. lakeview3 - 2021-05-09 18:48:00 |
| shelleigh wrote: it’s a joke isn’t it? Why not get building apprentices to knock up bog standard kitset transportables and ship them out by the dozen. The whole thing is just an utter disaster and the cost of housing is crippling many people who are spending large parts of their discretionary income on basically getting nowhere. Just makes me angry. But who do you vote for? They are all flipping USELESS. Edited by lakeview3 at 6:53 pm, Sun 9 May lakeview3 - 2021-05-09 18:50:00 |

As an older person, I'm in a 191 sq.m stand-alone house which is 11 years old, fresh, modern and well-designed with three good-sized bedrooms, a huge living/kitchen area and easy-care grounds. This suits me better than a unit because I find when we downsize too much we end up being pretty cramped. I don't find 3 bedrooms to be a bad thing; it means I can have space for visitors when I need to, but also use the wardrobes in them for extra storage, and in one of them I added a desk for my computer etc. I guess it all comes down to preference and lifestyle, but I couldn't at this stage shoe-horn myself into a tiny place, and there doesn't seem to be much difference in the price in any case. That's the problem. Labour are becoming more and more unviable and people are being turned off them in spades. Yet the alternatives are even more abhorrent. NO it's not. smallwoods - 2021-05-09 20:35:00 |
| Easy solution. Use census info. All homes not fully utilised should be treated like motels and corresponding sized families shifted into them. The home owner would be compensated the same amount as the motels and allowed the money untaxed as a sign of gratitude from the govt. This would encourage families to stay together and the young not venture to far, so first home owners would then not be out buying. Thus more houses available for renters, bringing rent prices down as investor won't want that type of client. LV then can get of the multi owned landlord grey brigade, as they will be the ones owning the rentals putting up with MSD clients as tenants. smallwoods - 2021-05-09 20:41:00 |
| Incompetent government solution to a problem they have no idea how to resolve. Sweeping the problem under the carpet in broad daylight like this unbelievable. The only conclusion one can draw from this decision is the politicians responsible must think the electorate is bloody stupid. blogzy - 2021-05-09 21:18:00 |

| Councils don't want cheap houses, they want absolute maximum rates revenue out of everything thats built, its that simple. Motels are being utilised because its far simpler than administering state houses and international media coverage of thousands of people living on the streets in NZ isnt going to look good on the PM's CV when that high paid cushy UN job gets applied for in New York in the mediium term future. Again its that simple. franc123 - 2021-05-09 22:08:00 |
| Motels never used to be the answer. People would generally just crowd in with extended family or sofa surf. Or behave better so they didn't get booted out. Social services would help others who lived on the street. Then someone started this motel malarkey and the lure of free rent with no other bills to pay was enticing. Even now paying $62.50pw (25%) with no other bills is still enticing. The motels were okay to begin with but now they're overrun with a lot of criminals, gang members and deportees. So for some people it's great - but for others it will be hell on earth. mazalinas - 2021-05-09 22:11:00 |
| Can't be shortage of rentals or rooms in flats forcing the government (aka taxpayer) to pay for households in motels. Thousands of vacancies advertised and that's just Trademe. What could the reason be? artemis - 2021-05-10 06:03:00 |
