Chorus Fibre Installation

#Post
1

Chorus have just installed an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) at our home, but they have put it at the easiest place for them (our garage) , If I connect our modem or router (in our lounge) to this ONT, is it a hard wire Cat5 type cable or is it a wireless connection? TIA to Trademe techs.

Hardwired connection from the ONT to your router. You may have to run cable somewhere to make it tidy.... through the wall, or ceiling or underfloor especially if your home has not been hardwired with CAT network cable.

if its still the same as mine there was 3 parts ... site visit - scope - install
the site visit part was where you tell them where you wanted the parts to be - the scope part was for them to install the cable from the street to the outside box - again placed in the location from the site visit plan - and the install was connection from the outside box to the ont

if you didnt tell them anything you can hardly complain now

Cable.
And you are supposed to agree where it goes with them...and sign you are happy with it.
Why didn't you specify where you wanted it?

Gee putting it in the garage is a bit pointless. When we got ours done they could have easily put it in our garage but instead they looked at where we had our computer and how our lounge was set up and picked the spot where the cable would go through the floor. Was quite easy for them though as our garage is under our lounge.

Chorus stick the ONT somewhere that you should have agreed to. In my case was very convenient as the fibre ONT was in the study where my old ADSL router was.

You then get a fibre plan from an ISP who will supply a suitable router. If you are happy to just use Wifi, then you could stick the new router into the garage and connect it with a short patch cable to the ONT.

Otherwise might be time to invest in running some ethernet cable from the ONT to the lounge. Depending on your house it might be an easy DIY job. If getting somebody in to do this, then plan it out as might be worthwhile running a few of cables and putting in ethernet sockets so you can get TV and computers etc all hardwired.

Thanks everyone, I will get up in the roof and run a cable - When they installed these guys whose fifth language was English just did what they wanted to do and were not interested in what I wanted. Because ii was free I could nor really argue.

Actually you could my mum kicked the installers out 3 times because they weren't listening. You can complain to the company that did the install.

Chorus suggested having the ONT in my bedroom along the side of the house, and I wanted it by the front door which would be shorter and has a power point right there.
Then they said the ground was too hard to dig, and went away.

So I dug a 600mm deep trench and put in a conduit with inspection boxes at all bends, and drilled a hole through the floor for the cable. Then it took them a few minutes to install the fibre.
And I can put other wiring in the conduit.

When we took possession of this house in february I signed up with Spark for a fibre install and in the online form I specified the date and time. Chorus arrived on time, I pointed to the spot on the garage wall next to the alarm panel where I wanted the ONT, I pointed to the panel I'd opened showing the old copper as it penetrated the brick, and I waved my hand near the roof showing how they could use the old wire to draw the new fibre. I went outside to show him the roadside pillbox and his offsider had already started digging. They completed the install in 1 visit in 45 minutes. The moving truck arrived during that time, so there were 5 men across 2 teams, all from the same part of the world, and there was no talking between them or mucking around. I've mocked Chorus in the past but in this instance I can't fault their effort.

I'm not in favour of installing the ONT and router in the lounge, because if you're going to run CAT to bedrooms and TV's then you want the central point of the star located to minimise the total cable length and make it as easy as possible. In my case I open the roof hatch above the alarm panel and ONT, and there is the frame with the SkyTV splitter and cables going to the lounge and bedrooms. I just need to follow the cable paths, maybe I could even use that RG6 as draw wires to pull the cat down the wall cavities, it's about the same diameter. But we're using wireless router from our previous house at the moment, the lounge TV is running Netflix in 4K, there's good reception in every bedroom and in the garden.
