DPinst64.exe. Is it a virus or not.

1 | Fresh install of windows 10 64bit. I use windows defender. It ran a scan and blocked the DPinst64.exe file. Was in the program files under DIFX. I went to the file in program files and deleted it, didn't uninstall it because it didn't have that option. I simply deleted it figuring if it was not suppose to be deleted it simply would not allow it to be deleted. There are mixed views about it being a virus or not. I just checked the windows 10 pro desktop here and it doesn't have the DIFX file in program files. Have I compromised the OS by deleting it. I am selling the machine it is on and obviously don't want any come backs. Google says it's a windows driver installer helper. Why the heck would windows defender grab it if it was good? muppet_slayer - 2021-05-01 18:57:00 |
2 | It's a fresh install. Where did you source the install media? nice_lady - 2021-05-01 19:12:00 |
3 | I plugged a samsung galaxy phone into the affected computer and it installed the drivers ok for it and wanted to progress. I don't think I have done any damage except maybe left one or two registry entries in the registry that will now sit dormant. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. I did copy it onto a usb stick and went from there and have done that numerous times and never struck the DIFX file. I had all the drivers saved on an hdd here bar 1. For some reason when I installed the OS this time, I had to source an extra driver, the Intel engine management driver (SP63611) I think the driver asked for was PCI serial port driver and the Intel engine management driver fixed it, could it have been that perhaps? I googled it and used the first one that appeared. I was finding it difficult to find so as soon as I found a download I used it. The computer runs flawless and I have run malwarebytes and super antispyware and they are all clear. Edited by muppet_slayer at 7:25 pm, Sat 1 May muppet_slayer - 2021-05-01 19:24:00 |

Why does the same file NOT appear on my windows 10 pro desktop, and I have never struck the problem I am having now before. Shall I start again and reinstall windows? I will if you guys think so. muppet_slayer - 2021-05-01 19:51:00 |

13 | I have downloaded the proper drivers from official HP site (instead of random ones from any site lol) so I shall see what happens. The Intel management engine driver is different to the one I was installing before so it will be interesting to see what happens there. Oh and I am installing the OS for a third time now because of the wrong drivers. muppet_slayer - 2021-05-01 20:47:00 |
14 | The DPinst64.exe problem ended up being a driver updater I was using to install an unknown device. It appeared in the program files directly after running the driver updater. The driver for it from HP site would not work. I ended up finding an old XP driver from below that took care of it. sp58201 near the bottom, the other one wouldn't work. muppet_slayer - 2021-05-01 22:41:00 |
