No it's not covered by the homeowner's contents insurance. Boarders have to take out their own.

One thing to be aware of - I know that when students go flatting they should take out insurance even if they don't have much in the way of personal effects, because they still need cover for personal liability in the event of them causing damage to the property. Might be worth checking out if this applies in the case of private board.

Great advice. Not everyone thinks about liability, only loss of goods.

Thanks Team - I would never have thought about personal liability insurance either.

It would pay to look at your home contents insurance policy or contact your insurance company. My mother has just moved in with us and our home contents insurance with State provides cover for her personal effects.

That's because she's part of your "immediate family" and thus covered by default.

Yes... it is one of the pillars of insurance.. it is called "insurable interest" if the boarders TV is stolen you as the home owner do not suffer any loss, therefore you can not insure it.. You can not take out an insurance policy on your next door neighbours car, because if it was involved in a crash, it would be no loss to you !!

while you are thinking about check your insurance if you have a boarder and they cause damage to your home or steal your possessions

No insurance if your boarder steals from you, unless they break into the house (forced entry).
