Whole House Heating Advice

#Post
1

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has got or knows of someone who has got a whole house heat pump, ducted/multi room air con system mainly for heating purposes. Particularly keen to hear from anyone who has the Panasonic system whether that was installed by HRV or anyone else. Interested to hear what you think of it, how it goes on running costs and if installed by HRV, what you thought of them.

I've been looking at this company, I am once we have renovated hoping to install an underfloor ducted heat pump system. Two reasons, for a more even heat though a large open plan area and also to hide the ugly heat pump particularly on the exterior.
We are covered for winter with a wood burner and two gas fires, but we need something in the cooler autumn and spring months as the house can sit at 15-16 in those months.

We have a fujitsu ceiling ducted / multi room air con system. Cost $16k , covers a 300sq metre house. Wall controlled. Put in last winter. The dvs or hrv has been shut down as its of no use. Works well, doest seem to cost anymore than running one large heat pump. Runs 24/7. We used actual heat pump installers who have been on the scene for a while for warranty purposes.

I have 2x Mitsubishi ducted systems in our house (335sqm). One smaller system handles upstairs and the other large one downstairs.

Only disadvantage is the inability to heat only one room, although you can add zoning dampers to take care of this but we were warned off it by the installer as they said the systems never seem to work great when throttled down.

We can however shut off unused bedrooms manually if theyre not being used longer term.

The system is fantastic. We were going to integrate a fresh on-air ventilation system with it but didn't because of cost. We are glad we didn't because it's basically redundant now.

I have a great Fujitsu ducted heat pump system - does a great job at heating open-plan living, four bedrooms and study. I wouldn't use HRV to install though.

things to consider here,
firstly avoid HRV like the plague/covid
there is quite a big difference between a ducted system and a multi room heat pump.

ducted systems have issues with duct work. nz simply doesn't have a residential duct industry. so i would be very cautious on how they actually install it. most kiwi homes run the ductwork "outside" (in ceiling or underfloor) so leaks and quality of duct insulation is a very big deal.
the big plus imho is being able to add ventilation supply to it. so instead of having two separate systems with separate ducting and outlets, its all in the same one.

multi room heat pumps works ok but doesn't move much heat into the hall ways, bathroom etc. but has the advantage of having different rooms at different temps.
the other issue is if you get multiple outdoor units (do you have enough room out side?) or one out door unit to run them all. one of the problems with using just one out door unit is they run into issues with low loads (big compressor trying to run a small indoor unit).

the other option is to have both systems.
eg ducted for bed rooms etc and a separate heat pump for the lounge/diner etc. this is because people tend to have bed rooms set colder than main living areas.

unfortunately esprit and gabby comments about not needing ventilation is completely and utterly wrong.
heat pumps NEVER replace ventilation systems. they are two completely different systems doing completely different things.
however you can add ventilation to a ducted heat pump.
