Please help a semi technology-literate oldie. I have a Samsung 27'' monitor which when I open up either first thing in morning or after taking break to do other things (like housework or cooking BLERK) the screen has a line which becomes many lines, then a blank screen. To get a screen that can be seen I have to unplug and replug cable Thanks in advance

Does turning the monitor off and then back on have the same effect ?
I'm assuming you set the system to go to sleep after a period of time ? Perhaps if you instead set the computer to play a screen saver that might not happen as the monitor will be 'in use' so to speak ?

Have you tried a different monitor on it ?

That sound to me that the display clock and the adapter clock have lost synchronisation, ie; it's gone into a mode that doesn't display correctly.

Find the setting for 'advanced display settings' and locate the display adapter properties, there's a button for 'List All Modes' - mine is set at 1920 x 1080 True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz. You'll probably find some modes display really poorly, but you might find some of the modes look good and don't have the syncronisation problem I think you're describing.

edit: and the other tip is that the display settings pages should describe the make and model of the monitor correctly - it shouldn't say "unknown monitor". If it does, then you should install the driver from the CD that came with the monitor, or download the driver from the manufacturers website, so that Windows knows correctly what modes the monitor can run.
