External screen for 15" MacBook Pro

#Post
1

I have a 15" MacBook Pro mid-2014 with a cracked screen. So far the lines only show on two edges and I can still use the Mac but that could get worse. I want to buy a suitable external screen as it's not worth spending big money on a replacement screen for the Mac. I would like a smallish screen due to lack of space -ideally similar size to the broken one. Would welcome advice on what to search for on here.

If you're not too fussy about high quality then any lcd/led etc screen that is 15" or bigger that fits the correct video output of your Mac. Such a small screen would almost be a give away price these days.

You just need to check what video output plugs your computer has and that any particular monitor will plug into it.

Most of those ones are 24" which is way too big and there's a smaller one that's USB but I think Thunderbolt would be a better video output.

According to Apple (https://support.apple.com/kb/-
sp704?locale=en_NZ), your MacBook Pro has a full size HDMI output port, you can use any type monitor but you'll need to buy the right HDMI adaptor or simply buy a monitor with HDMI input, something like listing #: 3060866746

My wife has identical laptop. It fell off the bed and has the same screen fault as yours. $1280 to replace the screen.
I thought I'd replace the whole computer till I see what they cost now for the equivalent... $4300+.
Any HDMI monitor or TV will plug straight in.

HDMI monitors seem to be a bit harder to get & more expensive in general.
Plenty of LCD/ LED screens around with Display Port (DP) & adapters are cheap & plentiful.
Price depends a lot on resolution & size respectively on their own merits to you.

It has a full size HDMI port with cable. Also DVI and VGA. Not sure about Display port -I will check. But it's the screen size that's the issue. The Mac is on my 60cm office desk with a shelf above it. I could do a big re-design of the space but really what I want is just a small screen with minimal depth that would attach directly to the wall behind the Mac -no bulky brackets etc.

Well with DVI and VGA and HDMI basically ANY monitor will just plug in all you'll need is the correct cable.

I've been looking here a lot for LCD/LED screens but nothing comes up that's small enough. It's not the price I'm concerned about -just the size and in particular the depth/thickness of the hardware. Most that I've seen have bulky fittings at the back for stands and I want to stick mine on the wall. No room for a stand on my desk. Ideally something not much bigger than the 15" broken screen of my Mac. Any suggestions?

The stands come off most monitors, just make sure the one you get has a VESA mount so you can fit it to the wall. Something like this should do fine https://www.trademe.co.nz/3075398035 (you won't get much smaller)

Yes, I have that one on my watchlist, nice-lady. The size is perfect. But somewhere I read, and I can't remember where, that a usb connection external screen will not show everything from my Macbook Pro. Not quite sure what wouldn't show but need to understand this before buying. It would also have to work from a hub as I have Time Machine on one of the two USB ports and everything else on a hub.

Way too big, unfortunately. But thanks anyway vtecintegra.

Replacement screens from China are available for under $NZ600 including shipping. Replacement is not hard.

Replacement is not hard for the non-Retina screen but I'm told that it's much harder for the 15" Retina screen.

Correction arthurdent. The poster at #9 does indeed have some listings. Not sure if s suitable monitor is amongst them but if not I'm sure if you asked a question on an auction you might get somewhere.

I often see 19" HP LED screens with DVI & VGA.
There are adapters for just about any connector type to another connector type.
VGA can handle up to 1920 x 1200 on specific models, so basic 1080P shouldn't be an issue.

Oh & all computer & TV screens are measured diagonally

VGA can technically handle very high resolutions, apparently 7680x4800 is no problem currently, but higher is possible?

Small correction.
The 1920 x 1200 res VGA only screens I have seen were not 19" screens.
I think they were 22" or 24"

I suspect it will be harder to find anything under 22" thats 1080P, unless you go brand new.

LG seem to pop up a lot on 1080P 19" searches
Most smaller screens drop down to about 1600 x 900 including LCD or LED.

According to Wikipedia: The DVI support : (Single) WUXGA (1,920 × 1,200) @ 60 Hz (Dual) Limited by copper bandwidth limitations, DVI source limitations, and DVI sink limitations.

The HDMI 1.4a support only 4096×2160p24 over a single link.

The VGA can go up to 2048x1536px @85 Hz (388 MHz), and rarely 2560x1920 @63 Hz.
<<<<<<<&l-
t;<<<<<<<-
<<<<

Apparently VGA suffers a bit in quality on the higher res rates when pushing limits.
Something to do with digital to analog conversion which is where DVI beats it.
But for casual viewing should be fine.

Yes, it is an old technology, but certainly not dead yet!

Very happy to report that I have bought on here a 15.6" external USB monitor. Had to do a bit of fiddling around to find some Legacy software for the display on Mac Mojave but that's installed now. It's really lightweight and has a simple fold-out stand for the desk but I'll probably attach it to the wall with Nano magic tape as it's light enough to do that. So, Arthur is a happy chappy now and and says thanks to everyone here who offered suggestions -especially nice_lady.

You have to be very careful, the macbook with the terminator chip (2018,2019,2020 models, I think) will probably not allow 3rd party parts.
