Wow, I just had a look at some and can't believe how expensive they are now! We bought my daughter an Armstrong flute and still have it. I'm sure from memory it was $250 at most - mind yo that was about 30 years ago, now it seems a good beginner flute goes from about $500! Yamaha has always had a good name in the past. We always asked the advice of music teachers so when you find the teacher, ask their advice on what you should buy. Be very careful with buying secondhand as you would probably need it serviced (pads replaced etc) and that's not cheap. Do you play any other instrument? I started on the recorder as an adult beginner and went onto the oboe.

When our son decided he wanted to play to flute at Intermediate we hired one through KBB Music I think - figuring that it probably wouldn't last long..... well, 6 years later he's still playing the thing (and in a school band no less!!!) so we finally decided to buy it..... fortunately, we had quite a discount because we'd been paying so much over the years anyway lolol!!!

Not a cheap instrument that's for sure.....

if you don't play any instrument, I suggest learning theory on the piano(and you can just have the app, not real instrument). It's much more graphic on the keyboard. KBB give deals on hiring the instruments and the hire money can later be used if you decided to purchase. They will also advise you on the instrument. Student models are lower quality, but by then you will make up your mind of whether you'd like to continue. Also, flute is quite well emulated on the keyboard, so if you are after the sound, you could download the sound without the pain of learning how to blow as well.
