Connecting HP Wireless Printer Advice Please.

#Post
1

Hi there, I'm in the process of connecting my laptop to a new printer. Ink and paper in and instructions printed out. Method three seems to be the one I need with the new modem I have (installed by Chorus a while ago in case I decide to use Fibre in the future)'
I have a WPS button on the modem so I can do steps 1 and 2. However step 3 tells me to visit 123.hp.com to install the HP software and get the most out of my printer.
Do I need to do this? Or is it a "marketing thing"? if the printer is connected to wifi successfully surely that would be sufficient. I really only need to print and scan I don't need the bells and whistles. Thanks.

If you can print/scan etc already then you've done the necessary steps already I'd say.

Thank you:) I'll see what happens when I press the buttons to connect to wifi lol. I had a feeling it may have been an unnecessary third step but just needed some computer savvy advice.

Not sure what you mean now. I thought you said you already had connected to the wifi with the printer and could print and scan ?

Sorry, didn't write my initial post properly. I'll try and explain. Plugged printer in, installed ink cartridges and filled paper tray. The video instruction on Youtube told me to print out Wireless Quick Start Guide and Printer Information Guide. have done that. the information page says the printer is not connected to a network, however wireless is turned on.
So. I haven't connected to a network yet?
Instructions for a modem with WPS are:
1. on printer ,press and hold the wireless button for 3 seconds. the wireless signal bars on the printer display will blink.
2. On the wireless router or wireless access point, press and hold the WPS button for 3 seconds. Wait for about 2 minutes.
Note: after the printer connects successfully the wireless light stops blinking and stays on.
I haven't done step one and two yet.
What I'm questioning the need for is step 3 : Visit 123,hp.com to install the HP software and get the most of your printer. do I need to do that bit?

step 1-3 above will only get the network connection done, so generally speaking yes, you will need the HP software. you can print and scan without it using Windows 10 built in functions but the hp software is the proper software package for there own print scan functions...

Ok that's clearer. Do the step 1 & 2.
That should get the printer connected to the wifi. You can then see if the computer will see it and can print and scan to it. I'd say though you may be better off going to the HP site and getting the correct package. It'll give you choices of what package to get. You could just do the minimum drivers if you wish. It may also include a network connection wizard and that can be very useful

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated.

Nope. The modem part allows PC to find printer wirelessly. The hp is so they can install the bloatware. Windows usually does the driver for you.

I don't know what " bloatware" is, not very tech savvy hence my questions on here.

software whose usefulness is reduced because of the excessive disk space and memory it requires.
"a nasty piece of cross-platform bloatware that's in serious need of a total overhaul"
unwanted software included on a new computer or mobile device by the manufacturer.
"users must initially contend with the usual bevy of bloatware (unnecessary toolbars, games of questionable value)"

But from what I see on here you seem to give sensible advice to people (including me in the past), and you've said the HP thing is okay? Not trying to be a smarta%se, just trying to understand.

Lythande is a bit paranoid at times but an experienced old time tech. However HP bloatware - well I can't comment on that because I haven't installed any Hp printer software of recent. In general however they usually offer more than one package, one which contains 'extras' some of which you may never use and the other will be pretty much just the drivers and perhaps a network 'wizard' which can be very useful if your system wont communicate easily with the printer for some reason. This package will be the basics and be perfectly fine. What exact model do you have please ?

I'm an old school type and personally I don't like the wireless printers and scanners because there;s no immediate feedback to give you confidence it's going to work.

Back in the mainframe days if you pressed transmit on an invoice, I'd programme the line printer to jump instantly, the confidence was right there that the page was going to follow.

Wireless printing and scanning doesn't do it for me, there's a delay and I start wondering if the connectivity is there and begin to look for problems. I've gone back to USB.

Well the printer is in the next room in this house but we can hear it activate as soon as it does. So it's not an issue and I'm not going to be messing around plugging and unplugging my laptop just to occasionally print something.

HP dj 2700 thanks. The basics one sounds fine then, I don't do complicated:)

the hp printer software is not really bloatware, it brings together a bunch of HP functions and tools into one place, that are necessary for using all the functions of the printer/scanner... The windows built in functions are usually fairly basic...
For example, if you don't install this you probably won't get on screen notifications about ink levels etc

and an example of bloatware...
All computers/laptops/phones etc often have
- a bunch of preinstalled apps/programs, mostly trials, that manufacturers presumably get paid to chuck on there
- a bunch of the brands own software that often has the same function as that built into windows, presumably for branding purposes

commonly referred to as bloatware...

Thanks for the explanation. sounds like the basic one that nice-lady was talking about would suit me.

looks like it wants to install the bloatware along with the driver. Buggar.

Just get what's on offer. Quite often during the install process you can make choices of what you want or don't.

Network printing using network cables is good if your printer supports it.

It's can be a pain in the ass tho because you have to physically plug into the printer. Not easy at times nor convenient.

Perhaps not, but sometimes one might have the printer and router in a close location.
