Output sound - mic with laptop?

#Post
1

I am a singer and need to do some practice with backing tracks that are on my laptop, and really prefer to use a microphone for this. I use an external bluetooth speaker for my laptop, to boost the sound, and ideally would like both the music and my voice to come out of that. Looking for advice as to whether this is even possible and if so what do I need? I don't have a microphone at the moment.

Kitty I have a small amp that I plug my laptop, microphone and guitar into when I practice.
To plug a microphone into your laptop, you would need to get an adaptor that plugs between the mic and your laptop's audio jack.
Have just seen you can get mics with a USB plug.

That would depend on the mic plug size and type. An adaptor may not be needed at all.

Kitty, is the speaker capable of taking input from more than one audio source at the same time?

Unfortunately laptops have deleted separate audio out and microphone in jacks.

Your best bet would be to get a USB audio interface. That way it will also have a pre-amp in it for your mic. You might be able to get one cheap second hand on Trademe. I got one which was actually reasonably modern which just had crackly pots, which I was easily able to clean myself. It was really cheap.

Have a look here:

Be aware that some of the older models won't work with the latest version of Windows, or MacOS, but will work under Linux. You can get Ubuntu Studio for free which is an operating system which is specifically designed for audio and other creative use. It will have all the software you need preinstalled and it is all free and already set up for sound use.
You could even record your own songs at home.

You can install it alongside your Windows or MacOS installation so you can boot into either.

If you get a newer interface, you can use it with the latest version of Windows or MacOS, but I don't know how much free audio software there is.

No it doesn't appear so.

May I ask the make and model of your amp and mic, please?

if it's not a new laptop it should have a mic in 3.5mm jack beside the headphone audio out jack

I'm going to suggest a boombox kind of thing that buskers might use, the one I'm going to link includes a microphone and can play MP3's off a memory stick (so you could use this without your laptop) and has bluetooth so you can use your laptop just like you use your current speaker, and is rechargeable so your could practice anywhere.

Nice lady that is true however if you have a decent mic then you will need an adaptor.

Sure can Kitty - I have a Laney Freestylle audiohub and a Shure Beta 58a mic.
