Or just plug it into the computer it'll possibly set it up automatically.

Yeah - nah - actually after a quick look Canon say Not supported on Win10 32 or 64 bit. I guess you have Win 10 ? You didn't say.

nah mate. I looked there. If you follow the download links it takes you to the canon site which says: "Unfortunately your device is no longer supported under the selected operating system."

the download link just redirects to the canon website, which only has the win 7 driver... which is probably still worth trying out on win 10 just in case, might work...

make sure you have a look through the vista_install.pdf doc, it walks you through a manual installation of the printer driver.
You'll probably have to choose "the printer i want isn't listed" and maybe "my printer is a little older - help me find it" option to get to that point on Win 10

Firstly just plug the printer into the computer and see it it'll set it up automatically. This is entirely possible. Failing that try installing the Win 7 driver. You can install things in 'compatibility mode' and that may help. To access this RIGHT clik the install file one time and choose 'compatibility mode' and then Win7.

On the devices I have tried. If it is a older scanner and the drivers for Win7 etc are 32bit versions. Win10 32bit should work, 64bit Win10 prob won't work.

A older device often do not support 64bit drivers which is what modern computers nowadays pretty much only use. In the past the consumer gear were pretty much all 32bit Windows ie no more than 4GB RAM or 3GB.

This Canon website only list 32bit drivers for Windows 7 which you most prob could get 32bit Windows 10 to work. It however doesn't have any 64 bit drivers, not even for Windows 7.

If you check the choices on canons website they say
"NOT supported" for both Win10 64 & 32 bit.

that doesn't necessarily mean it won't or can't work - sometimes they can be nudged into conformity. Not supported often can be translated as not reliably enough to guarantee simple installation and usage by and for the masses...

Well, yeah. As I've suggested, and the OP has yet to come back and confirm if they've even tried, just plug the bloody thing in already and see if Windows simply sets it up.

Surely that would be the first thing they tried hence coming on here to ask what to try next.

Personally I'd prefer the OP to confirm that. Around here - from long experience - I can tell you that assumptions are not a good idea.

You 'could' be right but I wouldn't guarantee it.

So what? We have a HP 5Si from 1996 which still works fine on W10 and other operating systems.

Some will some won't

Particularly the scanners - even though they install okay the supplied software no longer scans and you needs to change to Microsoft Scan or NAPS.

How bearable is it? Microsoft issued a min requirement as a 1Ghz CPU with 1GB of RAM or 2GB for 64 bit.

HP 5Si is a printer, so it doesn't have those specs. It came out with about 4 MB of ram (can support up to 132 MB) and a 40 MHz CPU, AMD Am29040.
