Cloning CD to USB

#Post
1

I have bought a new laptop and have a programme on a CD that I would like to install, but alas no CD drive. Can I burn the CD to a USB to install it, do I need a special programme?

Yeah you don't need any special program normally. Just get the CD into a CD drive and drag the contents onto a USB key. There's no "burning' involved it's just a straight file copy.

How would you burn the CD without a drive?
You can buy external optical drives...USB connection....

What sort of programme is it? I usually use RUFUS for making USB boot discs from .iso disc images. This is for doing system installations though.

Can you download the programme, instead of using the CD?

I didn't bother with suggesting the iso/boot usb idea as I'm assuming the program on the cd will simply be a file. Perhaps it's set to autorun on insert but there will still be an Exe on it.......Guess the OP might have to figure that bit out. Mostly, when people have a situation where they just stuff a cd into the drive and it runs automatically they simply don't comprehend that it's an 'autorun' and this can be bypassed. Learning curves in computing can be 'fun'.

Then's there a chance it's not compatible with Windows 10 on a new laptop. Ask for advice if it fails to install or run.

Also why not name the program - you might be surprised what the readers here can find if they look. Simply because it's no longer available from the original supplier doesn't mean it can't be located any more.

What is the programme, and what is its purpose?

The programme in question is Family Tree Maker Ver 11, I prefer to use this rather than the newer versions. I am running it on Windows 10 on this computer.

Yes ?
How ?
It's nice to come back and give some feedback and we appreciate it . It's also useful sometimes i for the benefit of others who may have a similar situation to detail a little of what worked for you so that can be taken into account for someone else in future.

My CD external drive cost about $60 and has been really useful. Can also burn from laptop.

Nice Lady I copied the CD over as you suggested, the first time it didn't work but after thinking about it during the night, decided I should have scanned both the CD and USB which I hadn't done. Finally used another USB and everything worked okay. Simple solutions are often the best, although I appreciated all suggestions offered.

Not sure what you mean by should have scanned cd & usb bit I'm happy it worked.

Nice Lady, I am not not very computer literate, however by scanning I meant checking the CD and USB for errors.

Hmm....ok. cd errors are often caused by scratching. Usb errors might mean a faulty idk device in which case it's be wise not to trust it. Throw it away and replace it with a nice new usb stick.
