But Netflix and Youtube don't?

Same device?

Different:

Server capabilities/locations.
Bandwidth requirements, (ie: different broadcast qualities....).
Different app settings for download quality.

Have a play with the apps quality settings perhaps if you reduce them a little if you can, it might help.....

You are not alone. My error message says app not optimised for your browser which ignores the fact that every other streaming service app has no problem with it...

TVNZ needs to get with the programme.

Edited to add, my device is a late model panasonic smart tv connected to the close by newish modem by ethernet, service is fibre unlimited, so it isn't that...

Open the Task Manager and look at the performance while playing the videos. If the CPU, GPU or wifi is pegged at 100% or maximum then your device can't keep up with decoding.

You shouldn't be using the web browser on the TV. OnDemand is available via the HbbTV component of Freeview or another TVNZ specific app.

Be more specific with how you access service.

Do you need a smart tv for freeview Hbb to save on internet?. Mine isn't smart [& neither am i] so just have the laptop via Hdmi to the tv for on demand, but no complaints.

Chromecasting from my PC to my TV works fine for On Demand. No buffering issues.
