Bl**dy advertisments

#Post

I watch YouTube quite a bit and had turned off the ads ages ago BUT recently something I really wanted to see was not available unless I turned off the ads blocker - which i did. When I went into the Google Chrome extention I couldn't remember what the blocker was called but pretty sure it was something like "UBlock" . The annoying thing is there's nothing in the extentions like that or any other advertisement blocker. Help please.

you could open youtube in an incognito window, that would probably work.

you can add/remove ublock from here

I use adblock plus in chrome and it is situated RH top by the 3 dots, click on the small what looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece. It can be managed from there.

ublock origin is the best I have found. adblock plus seems to use more system resources.

BS. You must have a slow machine, which will do that I guess.

Been using ABP for many years on different machines and never noticed it using any resources to the point of slowing my computers down. Must be just yours.

When you have a slow machine, you need all the resources you can get.

Anyway I was using ABP, but there was an issue with it, so I changed to uBlock Origin.

Regardless Ublock Origin is much more efficient. At least while it works, changes to Chrome are going cripple ad blockers.

Ok so I feel like a d**k. I did some digging and you are right ublock origin does use less system resources so uncle google says. I had not noticed ABP using more because my machine is fairly quick. Please accept my apologies!

No worries, I do have a slow old machine, which I can't yet upgrade because it still works, so no offence taken.

Cool thanks. We have a slow desktop here that takes a bit to get going. I might remove ABP from it and use ublock origin instead. Thanks for making me aware of the difference in the two main adblockers. I have just put ublock origin on the desktop and you know what, I think the old desktop is slightly faster now at loading pages :)

I just put ublock origin on my laptop too.

Another thing you can do is put a pi-hole into your network. It blocks ads and scripts at a DNS level. It is originally designed to run on a rasberry pi, but those are expensive. I am running on on an old HP thin client which I got for $15. The problem is it only had a 1 GB SSD, so it was hard getting an OS on there with enough room for the pi-hole programme as well.

Try and get one with a 2+ GB drive.

You've jogged my memory. There is an ad list that you could get from google and add it to your OS, forget where and how now. Was it a host file? But you could copy the list of ads, insert it into your OS and it would block all the ads in the list. I remember playing around with it a number of years ago now. Perhaps you would know what I am on about tyger?

Not sure. ublock has ad lists that you can change, but the other way is to also use a pi-hole. Actually I would use a pi-hole alone as that is good enough, except it doesn't block youtube ads, only ublock can do that it seems.

I figure if the pihole is blocking most of the ads, it will take the load of my machine, which is elderly.

Also since they are being blocked at the dns level, it should speed up the internet as less things are being downloaded.

tyger & muppet you are obviously more computer savvy than me with your talk of pi-holes, ABPs & DNS which this senior lady has no idea what you are on about.
I've put UBlock back on BUT what do you do about the screens that come up saying ..... Ad block detected
Please disable your ad blocker and reload the page ??

You may have to wait for tyger. I have only just started using ublock myself so don't really know it as tyger does.

I do know that if you click on the little ublock red shield RH top corner (the little red shield is visible using firefox but is hidden using chrome, if you're using chrome it is hidden inside the little jigsaw puzzle looking piece RH top, click on it and ublock should become visible in the drop down, click on that and the big blue 'on off button will come visible), you can disable it by clicking on the big blue 'on off' button, make sure you are on the website you want to disable it on. Then refresh the page and the 'adblocker detected' message should disappear and the ads should pop up.

I think you can probably disable it permanently on any particular website if you go there all the time but tyger might have to explain that to you, as I say I have only just started using ublock.

I never see ads anywhere, or get that message on youtube?

I use ublock origin and stands "Fair AdBlocker" but do also have 2 youtube specific blockers as well, so wonder if they are helping.

The other youtube one i like, is you tube non stop, which stops the annoying "video paused, continue watching?" annoyance when watching a playlist.

This is correct, I am not sure if it latches or not, but I have not tried to permanently whitelist a page on ublock.

Either turn off the adblocker for that site (the big power button when you click on the ublock origin icon disables adblocker for that site only)
or,
find another website for the information you need...

Often websites try to hide content if they detect an adblocker, simply because the ads pay the bills... There are anti anti-adblock measures but i can't say that they are simple to use or necessarily effective

Another useful extension I use removes Overlays that some websites insist on using to prevent you seeing content...
