More info required.

What backup program?
What updates?

Methinks OP is getting mixed up with "Backup" and "Update"

OP says: "When turning off at night says update and shutdown.
then when i turn on in the morning it says doing update then when complete says undoing updates cant complete!!"

Do you actually wait and let it complete the update and shut itself down before you turn the power off at night?

i'd forget about trying to update 8.1 and upgrade to windows 10 instead. Far nice version of windows. the upgrade is free and 8.1 is end of support in a couple of years

100% good advice .

And FYI it won't have anything whatsoever to do with cookies.

Yeah do the upgrade to 10 and then you can do a clean install of it after that once it has activated from the upgrade. 10 is a much better OS. The 8.1 drivers should work with 10.

Will that fix my problem how do i do a clean install after installing 10?

You don't.

Just install win 10 over the top of what you have. But to be sure run something like hdd sentinel prior to that to check the hard drive health.

Some will suggest you start afresh with a clean install of win 10. But that will wipe ALL of your existing system files data, photos, documents etc etc, and program settings, stored passwords, etc etc.. Which you would then have to reinstate from backup files etc. This can be a serious mission for someone without tech skills.

Yeah do as nice lady suggests, use the upgrade to 10 for as long as you want. What I meant was once you do the upgrade (you are doing the upgrade and not a clean install so that 10 will be activated with the 8.1 product key) and you get to keep all your files etc. You can then do a clean install of 10 anytime after that because the product key will be logged and connected to your PC as having 10 on it. You may as well use the upgrade for a few years before doing a clean install. If it were me I would clean install it straight after the upgrade but you do not have to do that.

You might want to backup your /home folder first though in case it goes bad during the update.
