#Post
1

Had a disaster yesterday, thought computer died over night wouldn't start, so went to use backup on External drive on Windows10 PC,
excel opens up but shows nothing?.
same as the same document on SD card, that I use on laptop when I am not home, laptop it is fine, but same result as External drive?
Power point is all good,
So what has gone wrong? what has changed?
Please any ideas appreciated?
Turned out it was the power adapter had died, on other computer, I borrowed one to check, sigh of relief !!,
But need to get this issue sorted asap,
But need to sort these files out?,

does it happen to ALL your excel files or just the one?

as for the different versions of the file, if you put the mouse over each it should pop up the file name and size. Is the size the same on the ext and SD. Sometimes when making copies you can copy a shortcut to a file, rather than copying the file itself...

It's all my excel files, files are not copied, they are saved to drives and SD cards,
they use to open on Win10 pc now will not?
as have used them before on this PC and old versions still saved here,
and they will not open either,
Yet I can open excel and start a new work book?,
It is weird to say the least,

have we tried restarting the computer? do that first then you could try and run the repair option for office, same place where you might uninstall it

It has been restarted,
If i uninstall I cannot reinstall as it is disk, not an app, and it has been used across Computers and laptops, for number quoted,
as I could not use on a new laptop, as key has been used to full amount,
as my last trip away I took new laptop and I was cheeky & used the 28 days free trial 365, and when I came home cancelled it, so didn't pay after 28 days,
as no International Travel for some time, not paying for it on there until I actually need too,
It was the same SD card, same Excel file that will not open up here, but will elsewhere,
some Excel files on here were actually created on this PC?

Ok sorted, cannot go directly into files, but can get in there around the bush Lol!,
Ok you get blank excel screen when you click on files to open, you then go to file to open, it takes you to PC Documents,
Scroll down to drive open it then click on files they will then open, phew!,
Something has changed though!

Hopefully Nice_lady may come along and shed some light on the problem?,

Not in an office anymore where you could just ring up IT, and sit and watch mouse navigating it's way around your computer,
Same desk space and PC used by 2 different people on our own sign on's,
one on day shift, then another on Afternoon,
even with good IT's crap happens, when we go to log onto another PC that you have always used also, and get message you do not have access to this PC, or unauthorized etc, at least I was not the only one that got that message and locked out,
Then run around and try to find one you could log into Lol!, then find you have to share it until problems sorted,
They were the days,

For the moment I'd definitely vote for that as a good option.

Does it not open when trying to double click on the document.

Does it open if you open excel first then select file, open, select the document.

The application (Excel) should be installed on your local C: drive. Create a folder on C: called 'Excell.DAT' as save EVERY Excel file in there (with their own groups/folders).

Then regularly copy the folder to your external backup drive, unplug that drive and lock it somewhere away from your PC where a given problem can't get at both devices. Things to consider are: fire, water ingress, theft.

If you need an external drive to transport your work to another PC then buy a second one.

Because it's looking for the info elsewhere....thats a bad explanation...but it's all intertwined with where (on C:) the libs etc are stored, not to mention registry and stuff. The horrible way windows manages its software.
