Yesterday my computer told me to download the latest version of Windows 10.. That took several hours. This morning I have a new button at the bottom which says "Talk to Cortana". I haven't opened it. Should I ?

Told you to....do you respond to all messages that pop up?
Rather dangerous....
Google Cortana.

Ya - not a problem app. I don't even think it work in NZ.
I don't use it myself.

Sorry lythande. n the machine beeps at me, yes I do respond. Sorry I'm not as smart as you are. I do the best I can but not simple at my age. 84! Am yes, I have googled it and now know what it is. Big Brother watching over me.
Is it possible that I can use another program which is not Microsoft?

Yes but it would be A HUGE learning curve. Forget it. Microsoft is fine and cortana won't activate or do anything unless you want it to.

You could use Apple Macintosh, but that would require a new computer.

There are other free operating systems, but they require a wee bit of learning. Maybe there is a computer support group nearby who can give you info.

The age isn't a big factor, you might have been involved in technical fields when you were younger.

what do you use the computer for? If its just email & internet any version of linux will do, my fav at the moment is manjaro. But ubuntu & mint are popular too. Every OS has updates though so swapping just to avoid microsoft updates wouldn't accomplish much.

At 84 you're suggesting the OP who is having trouble with Windows move to Linux.

Stupidity.

There are plenty of anti-Linux crusaders on this board. Although to be honest, Linux is so easy to use these days it wouldn't be a problem for her if she can get someone to give her a hand to install it.

Just because someone is a little older doesn't mean they are not intelligent.

The OP is only slightly older than the USA president.

honestly some of those responses above are just cringeworthy... A message popped up inviting OP to try a new feature - now Op needs to try Linux... FFS

Not sure what you googled but Cortana is nothing more than a Digital Assistant...
- Apple devices have Siri
- Android devices have Google Assistant
- Samsung have Bixby
- Alexa is another...

It's all normal, there is nothing untoward going on... unfortunately some on this board tend to jump on perceived problems in an attempt to convert the masses [to linux]...

I played with Cortana when it appeared, I didn't find talking to the computer more effective than using the mouse and keyboard so regarded it as a novelty, try once or twice and never again.

I didn't say nor did I imply that.
I've had plenty to do with elderly folk who use computers and among them notably 3 ladies all in their MID NINETIES ! So I'm also aware of limitations. And irrespective of age I would never suggest to someone who was having small difficulties with Windows or some app that they switch to Linux 'because it's easier'.

Go into settings and turn it off,,simple if you don't want to use it

My impression was that the person didn't have any problems using their computer, they just had this mysterious popup come up and wanted to check it out in case it was something dodgy.

They looked it up online and were a little concerned with the level of surveillance on Windows now. They appeared to be interested in other systems other than Microsoft.

tygertung - 2021-03-21 20:58:00

As asked above OP, what do you use the computer for?

"They looked it up online and were a little concerned with the level of surveillance on Windows now"

Yeah Google can bring you all sorts of results many of which are skewed. It can take a person considerable experience to be astute in the vagaries of searching. Only the OP knows what's made them paranoid about microsoft but the fact they even asked about alternatives shows they're not really understanding. After all as we know there's MS, Apple, & Linux and that's it's.

FreeBSD? ChromeOS? AmigaOS? RiscOS

FreeBSD is pretty niche and AmigaOS and RiscOS are even more so, but ChromeOS is pretty mainstream, but I think it should have just as much surveillance as Windows, maybe more.

honestly all this talk about "surveillance" in windows is just BS misinformation about what info is collected and why.

Nothing is gathered without permission, and the reasons why are fully disclosed. But you're making it out like windows is turning on the camera and microphone to spy on the user.

It's just plain wrong that you fanboys play on people's fears like this, and worse that it is simply for the lame ass reason of trying to convert them to linux, or at least away from windows...

I didn't suggest that, stupidity seems to be a good description of your reading comprehension.

You pro-Windows crusaders need to stop being so defensive. It was the OP whop was concerned about surveillance.

yeah presumably after reading all the crap posted by your comrades in the anti-Microsoft brigade...

I'm simply trying to save someone from causing themselves no end of grief by following bad advice, for a perceived problem that is a non-event... You can call that defensive if you like, I don't...

Totally agree and I am no MS fanboy either.

The OP could easily have taken this:

"what do you use the computer for? If its just email & internet any version of linux will do, my fav at the moment is manjaro. But ubuntu & mint are popular too."

as an encouragement.

Lubuntu is super easy to use, has pretty much the same look and feel as Windows, and runs really fast, even on old slow hardware.

If one was looking for an alternative to Windows 10, Lubuntu would be a good one.

If one is happy with Windows 10, stay with that.

Yes they could have. Which is why my post didn't stop there, The part you didn't quote makes that very clear.
