Windows 10 update - docs won't open now

1 | When I try to open an Excel or Word doc directly or through my directory I get a spanky orange box pop up to say 'Updating Office' followed by an error message along the lines of 'Application unable to start correctly error 0xc0000142.' Is this to be expected - I think I did read somewhere that there was disruption to people's computers etc because of the upgrade. How can I fix it? Help, please! 2 | that usually happens because a copy of word/excel etc is already open in the background that hasn't closed off properly (ie no visible windows) - because of that the update that it wants to do for office fails. Usually a restart fixes it... or opening Task Manager and killing the ghost processes ie any instances of word/excel on the details tab Edited by king1 at 4:26 pm, Thu 18 Mar king1 - 2021-03-18 16:25:00 |
3 | Cool, I have already tried the switch it off and on again trick and there's nothing in my task manager, but I will re-try it all again. Many thanks. ekmo - 2021-03-18 16:32:00 |
4 | No change after repeating. This is the only related? thing in the details tab of the task manager? OfficeClickToRun.exe 3872 Running SYSTEM 00 8,416 K Not allowed ekmo - 2021-03-18 16:55:00 |
5 | Download Libre Office (free) or Open Office and use that to open the file. You could then save it in Excel or Word format. Or just keep using LibreOffice. trade4us2 - 2021-03-18 17:01:00 |
6 | I'd suggest it's trying to download and run a new version, such as Office 365, rather than running the existing versions installed on your computer. Try running Excel or Word by clicking the program icons and then opening some files from your disk. You might need to re-associate the file extensions with the programs installed on your computer, or somehow clobber the OfficeClickToRun gyrogearloose - 2021-03-18 17:02:00 |
7 | do the restart to kill any existing processes, then on restart run the repair option for office, in settings -> apps and features -> apps list. Edited by king1 at 5:39 pm, Thu 18 Mar king1 - 2021-03-18 17:38:00 |

Exactly, this the only reason jumped into my mind, Windows re-associated all the Office files to the online version instead of using the installed one, I would go with Right-click any office file and choose Open With, and select your installed version and see how in goes. flower_tears - 2021-03-19 19:34:00 |
