How to slave a former primary drive?

#Post
1

My primary drive won't load win10 so I've bought a ssd drive to replace it. I want to get the data off my former drive by slaving it, and there seems to be a conflict between the two, probably the former drive trying to load Win10. How do I slave the former drive as its a sata - is it possible via jumper settings?

no that's an old IDE cable concept, sata it doesn't matter. Just use the boot menu in the bios to choose which drive boots first, sometimes ESC F9 or F12 will bring up the boot device menu

You do not slave drives anymore. Go into the BIOS and set the SSD as the first boot device, assuming Windows is installed on it.

Even with IDE cables it doesn't seem to make much difference any more. I usually just set the jumper to cable select.

I have sometimes had to use an external hdd adapter to remove the boot files, then fit as a slave hdd.
It's a lingering problem from the XP days where the XP boot menu overrode all other boot menus regardless of boot selection.
