Ethernet switch or ethernet hub or add a router

#Post
1

We are on fibre at home. I have an ethernet cable out to the workshop which plugs into a wifi device in the ceiling. There is only 1 ethernet in port on this device and zero out ports. The computer in the workshop connects to the internet via wifi and I'm able to use my phone on wifi in the workshop as well. I want to retain the wifi but connect the computer via cable. Do I need a switch, hub or another router?

If you have an ethernet cable to the workshop to a wifi device, you could run a second cable to connect your computer.

I have no wish to run a second cable under the house and then up to the roof to get to the workshop. I am trying to get what I want on the cable I already have.

is the current Wi-Fi device using POE?

I genuinely have no clue, I do not even know what POE is

OK now I know, it can be either, it runs fine without a power adapter but there is a socket to plug one in and I do have one available.

I only ask as if the current cable is sending power down as well to power up your WiFi unit you may not want to just plug in a network switch at that end without moving the power injector to the shed end. (if it has one)

good question their answer implies it has a POE injector somewhere. And you DO NOT want to plug a POE injected cable into a non- POE switch. unless you like burning smells.

Only if it is a passive POE device or injector - anything that is a 802.3af compliant will only supply power when the remote device is a POE 802.3af/at compliant.

That is my search, I see some of them say unmanaged should I be looking for one that is managed? Some say 10/100 while others are 10/100/1000 which I presume means they are capable of being faster. Feel free to point me at a suitable one please.

You don't need managed - I would get only gigabit these days.
Do a search as you did but search for gigabit - saw a $20 tp-link that should work fine. Also by the way any modem router (with spare network ports at the back obviously) you have around can be used as a switch - you will just need to do two things to it, change the units ip address so it does not clash with anything else on the network and disable DHCP.

OK thank you. Once we are unlocked I'll get one from PB Tech.

You should be able to get a second hand router/switch/hub thingy on trademe for $1, no need to buy an expensive $20 one.

New switch fitted yesterday, computer running directly from the cable now and the wifi booster still spreading the love around the workshop. Next project is to boost the mobile signal inside the metal workshop 'cos rain or shine I need to step out the door to have a proper mobile conversation.

It is probably somewhat of a Faraday cage. Perhaps you could work out where the cellphone tower is and change the metal cladding on that side to plywood?

I have already purchased the mobile booster, I need to now get myself a long pole to mount the external aerial on. They kept it secret in the online specs that the aerial needs to be 10 meters from my internal signal boosted transmitter. That put paid to my initial plan to just mount it onto the end of the garage and have the transmitter inside in the rafters in the middle.

Most of these cellular boosters are completely illegal in NZ.

I'll be boosting it within my own Faraday Cage so I don't expect much to escape out the side door.
