Tauranga housing squeeze
# | Post |

1 | A squeeze on Tauranga's housing supply is seeing people desperate to find a home coming to a rental agent in tears and a property developer predicting the area will run out of land to build houses on in the next two years. Ain't seen nothing yet... pcle - 2021-02-12 12:56:00 |
2 | Bet there are many places unrented with the ever changing rental requirements. Our family has a very nice 2 bedroom unit at Ohope beach that has been recently recarpeted and painted inside that isn't going back on the rental market. It hasn't got heating (rarely need it there) but other wise probably meets most standards, Wouldn't want anyone putting holes in the wall however. One has to wonder just how many homes have gone off the rental market in the last 3 years because of the changes made. Like ours they also may not have been sold to others to make a home in. bryalea - 2021-02-12 13:54:00 |

That’s what they do in some places in Germany, and then they use the tax to do the infrastructure/development costs for subdivisions for first home buyers only. lakeview3 - 2021-02-12 14:00:00 |
4 | Lots of complaints about rental shortages and high rents in Wellington, though that is usual this time of year. Some of those complaining have been in the media pushing for better conditions and more secure tenure. What did they think would happen when they got what they wanted. artemis - 2021-02-12 14:00:00 |

Yep and on top of an expected rate rise (talk of up to 23%), it's going to make renting in inner city Wellington like renting in Monaco. Great if your a landlord, shit if your a tenant. fxx99 - 2021-02-12 14:22:00 |
9 | lakeview3 wrote: Yeah cause more tax makes things sooooooo much cheaper! We should have a 25% capital gains tax like Germany as well. Imagine how cheap the houses will be then! pcle - 2021-02-12 14:52:00 |
10 | apollo11 wrote: oh well mayne they could make it so that people could own the house they live in and one other? Seems realistic? lakeview3 - 2021-02-12 15:04:00 |
11 | pcle wrote: well it’s worked in Germany and got a lot of first home buyers into their own home. Can’t understand why some people want to make it so hard for people to get ahead. It’s like they want everything for themselves and nothing for others. *Disclaimer* I already own my own home so I am not posting these messages because *its all about me*. lakeview3 - 2021-02-12 15:06:00 |
12 | No surprises things are getting worse. What was the current Government thinking when they declared a Housing crisis, but allowed net migration to continue at 1.5 percent of the population (70,000 / 4,700,000) to continue. All they did was copy from the 2017 pre election update that net migration should be falling to 20,000 per year, but put no polices in place to achieve it. Current 2020 treasury update is things are going to continue as previously (70,000 per year), just a bunch of virtually signaling idiots. Oh, but Kiwibuild 10,000 houses per year was going to solve the problem, NOT. Going to end up with stagnation in the economy since no one can move location for a new job now which was already occurring in Queenstown pre Covid 19 ian1990 - 2021-02-12 15:16:00 |

That would probably take 99% of empty houses out of contention. How would you handle houses owned in a trust? apollo11 - 2021-02-12 15:26:00 |
14 | Have also seen a claim, that there is around 12,000 people actively trying to book MIQ vouchers to return to NZ. And there are probably at least that number again who are not actively trying to book, but who would do so if the demand reduces. That is alot of extra houses needed. aredwood - 2021-02-12 15:27:00 |

16 | The issue I have with your 'tax and spend' ideas, lakeview- is that you want government to punish (tax) private citizens for a problem that government has caused in the first place. apollo11 - 2021-02-12 15:29:00 |

21 | apollo11 wrote: the problem is, this has been a problem for the last 20 years and NONE of the governments have done anything about it when they should have. There are multiple issues around this, we all know what they are, the govt knows what they are. The time is well and truly over for something to be done about it. lakeview3 - 2021-02-12 16:52:00 |

28 | Tauranga is broken because they didn’t do the infrastructure 20 years ago. Same stretches of road and more and more people squeezing in trying to be a close to the beach as possible. lakeview3 - 2021-02-12 17:19:00 |
