I would like to hear views on what is the best video downloader for downloading from all sources, not just YouTube. Free would be preferred, but not averse to paying for one if it's that much better than the free ones.

I don't think you will get an "all in one" solution that works well.
Theres a lot of different formats now & a lot of clever tricks to stop ppl from downloading their videos which get updated from time to time.

I use 4K video downloader for youtube

and i use this one for most other sites... there is a helper program you will also need to install for saving files. it works well

as alluded to above, downloading videos is generally a breach of the websites terms and conditions, and potentially also a copyright issue

Thanks for the suggestion.
The kind of videos I want to download are mainly of the news/documentary variety, which in today's cancel culture, are likely to disappear fairly quickly. If you see a video you don't have time to watch at the time, and simply bookmark it, lo and behold, the next day it's gone!
