What issues have you heard about Lenovo? I have a Lenovo Chromebook. I'd choose it over the other two brands. But it all comes down to specific models - every brand has an underpowered version.

Not issues as such. I should have edited that. I've heard the hinges aren't as good. One guy said he'd pick Acer over both Lenovo and HP But HP over Lenovo. ????

Hmm, what kinda guy? If they were a sales person in many of the big box retail stores I def wouldn't take their word for it, they can also be biased on sales rewards programs where they get extra bonuses on brands. Ask somewhere like pb where staff actually know their products and as a major service agent they know which models comeback.

Personally I'd def look semi rugged or a higher grade machine as they get a hard physical life, harder knocks than many business laptops. Spec wise they are generally similar in many ways.

Ps, I agree not all Lenovo are the same, but think pad is their business grade brand with a solid reputation so those ones should be far reliable if it includes that on a particular model. They used to have think pad ones but not sure if they still do.

Personally we've had troubles with Asus Zenbook hinges breaking and also HP pavillion hinges breaking. These are not chrombooks but 14" laptops. We are not rough with them.

Leveno that you buy directly from Leveno are way better quality.

I bought Acer laptop, 10inch screen, dual processes, Android and Windows operating system. $600 back in the day, it came with only 1 gigabyte of RAM and was slow and bloody useless, expanded it to the maximum of 2 gigabytes and it was still bloody useless. They had a cheek selling the thing in the first place.
Never touch an Acer again, flimsy bloody things too, keys thinner than a rice cracker.
A month later I won an iPad 2 and it's never missed a beat in 12 years still on the same battery.

I'm
Probably had a really crap processor.

ummm like ALL brands Acer devices at the bottom end of the market are made cheap, they are all flimsy when you only pay 600 for it... Acer make some exceptionally good, solid and reliable laptops if you're prepared to pay a bit more ie $1000 plus

The Acer Chromebook are actually pretty rough. Are made for kids. I've had no issues with them breaking as such. Miss 15s lasted her 5 yes. This one is still working but won't start unless plugged in. Now which is hopeless for school. The bug bare is you can't just fix the start key...you have to replace the whole motherboard. So not worth it. I'll probably get another Acer so think. Thanks for all you input.

I'm still using a ASUS netbook from 2011 and it is still going strong. Battery is still good too.

I'ts a computer running chromeOS. specifically made by google to use its web apps. gmail / google docs / google sheets / google photos / google drive. (and more).

They are very popular in schools as they only need to be very low spec and cheap.

They are also great for people at home who want to use gmail, etc, and have their data safely stored in the cloud.

Because of they way some schools operate they can be ideal for students usage, some schools for example get students to work exclusively in Google docs so they don't need a machine running office. They should be cheaper than they are in NZ but they have some advantages in student use, eg everything is synced to cloud acct so if a device is lost or damage almost no work is lost and they can access it from almost ant other device and carry on. They are generally small and very portable which is great if carried to and from school daily.

PS, teen here used a refurbished chrombook from y8-y11 then was upgraded to a very nice Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga X1 for y12/13 (it was 40% off as end of line Gen1 machine when they released Gen2, gap year and now starting Uni a d still going strong and still high spec but was waaay over spec'd for her needs but that's the model that was discounted. .

Not anymore, now they do support Android apps plus Linux.
I wouldn't go back to my desktop PC unless I need to use a windows only application.
For me the Chromebook advantages are generally lightweight, extremely long battery (10hrs+), can do all my daily usual tasks, and you don't need to be online anymore to do that.

My favs Chromebooks are Asus as they have Rubber bumper, Spill-resistant and Tamper-resistant keyboard and built to surpass demanding military-grade MIL-STD-810G durability standards.

Linus doesn't have to consider budget like schools and students so as a power tech user I would have expected him to dislike them lol.

They have a place in the education market and much more useful than netbooks of the past trying to run windows. There is still a lot of misinformation like thinking they are useless without WiFi. The first ones were but that has been addressed and for most apps you just work offline and sync next time connected. DD used to write assignments on long train trips each week and eve.n found things like a python compiler so she could do a programming course on it. She could do more than some of her peers on macbooks and windows at times, certainly didn't limit her until school switched to microsoft365 and onenote but were upgrading then anyhow.

But back to OP, there isn't much between brands but it is def worth looking at the ruggedised models, they handle the wear and tear of school use and in and out of bags all day better. If not then get a good protective sleeve I insist kids use it evertime it goes in a bag. Stay small screen, bigger is just easier to knock off desks and often the screen has same resolution anyhow.
