Lenova tablet.

#Post
1

I bought a Lenova tablet for my husband who has always been reluctant to become tech savvy.
In the box was a wee tool that I don't recognise, and I have no idea what to do with it.
The tablet seems to be operating ok without the tool

Its for opening drawer to put SIM card in, you will find little hole at side to put it in and push and drawer will slide out.

It looks like a sim card ejector pin. You would use a similar one for your mobile phone when you want to insert a sim card.

ignoramus here, I have an ipad, no sim card. my husband only needs something to play games, watch videos, or send the occasional message.
Why would he need a sim card which I assume needs to be bought separately.
I never thought I would get him hanging onto a tablet. wonders never cease
BTW, we have no cell phone reception, so don't have a smart phone, therefore no sim card, although we DO have an el cheapo phone that lives in the van in case we have an emergency when we're out.
I wonder how may people would renew their $20 top up when it still had $20 credit on it (due to expire). I have not made a call on our current phone in two years, the last phone I had was 15 years old when the battery died.

All mobile phones - 'smart or not' - use a SIM card. You have purchased a Lenovo tablet, (Not LenovA), which is SIM capable which means if you had a SIM card in it the tablet would be capable of connecting to the Cell signal network and downloading or otherwise communicating thru the internet at remote sites. And because it's Cell capable it would have cost you a little bit more than a WIFI only capable tablet. So you can ignore the little tool as you won't need it. Anyway in regard to topping up your phone - well a lot of people don't and so they lose their connection in the end. But you can still make an actual EMERGENCY call even if you have no credit on the device. And anyway $20 for a years connection is cheap.

thank you, nice_lady, much appreciate your info. I agree, $20 is a small price to pay to have the security of an emergency call when needed, EXCEPT that there are a lot of pockets with no reception, between here and Whakatane which is where we mostly travel to if we leave our own little town.

You may or may not be aware that some providers have better coverage than others.
This is dependant on locality.
For instance you may get better reception in those areas with a telecom/Spark based connection rather than Voda. Etc

And so long as you have a sim card in the phone, even if it's not 'paid up' you can make a 111 call and in areas of poor reception the phone will connect to whatever tower it can for emergency calls regardless of who your provider is.

Not all Lenovo tablets are sim capable, in fact only high end tend to be. Lenovo have a big range in tablets from budget to quite high spec. On our older ones the tool and tiny hole is for hard reset only that you might use if it's not responding to menus to factory reset there, there is no flap to open in that position. I've never needed to hard reset ours.

On ours the sim (if mobile data capable) and micro sd card are under a flap you can open with your thumbnail elsewhere on the edge.

If you want to post the model you have, I'm happy to check for you. I had two second hand tab 2 a10=70f which were great for years. But last one developed a WiFi component fault so have just replaced with a Huawei. I may hunt down the part and repair, not easy to find but someone was selling the component recovered from one they were scrapping on that international site ????????????

Most cell phones will put emergency calls through without SIM installed.

Most likely the tray is actually for an SD Card to expand the storage, and although the tray 'may' have room for a SIM as well, it's unlikely the required WWAN (cellular) hardware is actually in it. Lenovo are known for minimal Storage. I have one from my Brother which he got fed up with because of the small onboard storage, so every time there's a Windows update, it fails because there's not enough free space. Was a mission to do it last time. The tray in that one takes SD & SIM. So the SD Card is best for saving photos etc to rather than the internal storage. If it's only being used to play games, watch video and send occasional message he won't need it. Just be sure to tell him that if he receives messages (emails) with attachments, and he saves them, they have to go somewhere.

Really disagree that Lenovo are notorious for lack or storage, budget and entry level tablets of ALL brands skimp on various specs to compete on price and ram and storage and screen res etc. It's up to a buyer to make decisions on what specs they value most and decide which they are prepared to compromise on for their budget. Lenovo do budget models right up to high spec in android tablets, if you want more ram or storage it's available if you spend more. Samsung are similar imho, they also have entry level tablets thru to business high end tablets for the extra $$. With school going back retailers will start pushing byod deals shortly on tablets and get very price competitive but you need to be very savvy on specs relative to price on tablets.

OP hasn't mentioned windows and highly unlikely it's a Lenovo windows tablet as these are harder to find in nz and a much more expensive product, eg thinkpad windows tablets are pricey. The kind of near +$2k prices where you only buy one of you know what you are buying and what any included tool will be useful for.
